FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

This page is meant to provide a listing of commonly asked questions for users of this site.

How do I determine if someone is buried in a particular cemetery?
First, make sure your cemetery of interest is actually in Marion County. Use the Cemetery Records page on this site. Once you know the cemetery and have it confirmed that it is in Marion county, now you have several means looking for an individual. The simplest is to use the box in the middle of the page on the above link where you can enter in a surname in a Find a Grave search page. Another option is to the search in the IAGenWeb Gravestone Photo Project by using the fifth item on the page whose link is above that starts with "Index by Name". If none of those work, there are some listings of burials in individual cemeteries that are given right below the Find a Grave search box first mentioned. If none of these help, you may need to contact the sexton for the cemetery. See the next question.
How do I determine where someone is buried in a particular cemetery or how can I learn about how one can be buried in a particular cemetery in the county?
First, make sure your cemetery of interest is actually in Marion County. Use the Cemetery Records page on this site. Second, if you want to see where someone is buried, sometimes the photograph submitted on Find a Grave has the lat/long added and the record will have a link that says "Show map". If the cemetery is smaller, you can to it (use the link above to find directions within the Find a Grave page for the cemetery) and search yourself. Otherwise, which also applies who are interested in learning about a burial at the cemetery, you will need to find the sexton for the cemetery, the person who looks after the cemetery. This person has some turnover and it is difficult to keep a list, so it best to contact the Marion County court house. You might first start with a query for "cemetery" at the county site. If you get a name for a sexton, let me know (use email link in the footer) and I will start making a list at this site.
