from PIONEERS OF MARION COUNTY, Consisting of a General History of the County by Wm. M. Donnell. Des Moines, Iowa: Republican Steam Printing House. 1872. SCGE# 04182

In the spring of 1844, Ray Alfrey and wife moved in and occupied the cabin of Mr. Bedel, he boarding with them. During their residence here of two or three years, a feeling of jealousy on the part of Mrs. Alfrey, in consequence of the inconstancy of her husband, resulted in the first divorce case in the county. The case was successfully conducted by J. W. Alley. Mr Alfrey had left the country at about the time the Indians did, and returned to find himself a "grass widower," when he soon disappeared the second time, and his whereabouts is not known.

There are five more paragraphs on Joseph, the father and Sylvester, the son, in the 3rd volume of The History of Washington Co. Vol. II published in 1909. Other references include the Washington Co. Iowa twnship 1910 and 1920 census (Sylvester) and a parish history of St. Mary's parish, Riverside Iowa,1903-1930. I have lots more research to do here and if anyone has information, especially on the Apalona Miller connection, it would be helpful.

    Proof:

Have sesquecentennial certif. for him issued by IGS. Wm and Anna arrived in 1846 before Iowa officially became a state. Have letter written to them in Nov.1846 by Nathan Brown, Anna's father, from Ohio asking how the trip was, etc. and replying to the Cottrells' letters of Nov. 2 and 5 from Marion Co., IA. The Cottrells had a farm in Red Rock. William Cottrell was one of the group in the Red Rock Mining Co. who traveled by mule to the California gold fields in 1849. Those men's names were listed in the Frontier Guardian newspaper, Kanesville, May 16, 1849. I have many letters William wrote back to Anna on his 2 or 3 trips to the gold fields. Anna died before William returned from his last trip there in 1854. In 1851 the Cottrells had bought a new farm 4- 3/4 mi. south of Prairie City, in Jasper Co. and by that time the Nathan Brown family had moved to Marion Co. Copies of these old letters are in a book I wrote "The Cottrell Adventure With the Wright Connection and Some Cash, Too," copies of which are in the Prairie City Library and the Iowa Genealogical Society files.

Leopold was a prominent businessman in Marion County. He was deeply involved in the Masonic Lodge of Iowa for over thirty years and had achieved one of the highest orders you can get for being in the Masons. This can be proven by a letter I received by the vice-president of the State Masonic Lodge for Iowa. I also believe that a write-up in one of the local papers for Iowa gave a list of the accomplishments that Leopold did. This write-up was in the Knoxville paper on January 18, 1922. Leopold had five children, Charles, Arthur, Lee, Mrs. C. F. Wagaman, and I believe Mrs. John Metz. Arthur was an oil speculator and my grandfather Charles was a Vet of WWI.

Obituaries from Knoxville Journal dated 29 April, 1910, Knoxville Express, dated 27 April, 1910 and Knoxville Journal dated 12 May, 1915. Grave stone at Lincoln Cemetery.

"Asa Milner, a pioneer citizen of Marion County [Iowa] was born in Belmont County, Ohio, October 23, 1831. He was the youngest and very last of a family of 11 children born to Joseph and Susannah McNabb Milner. His childhood education was such as was then afforded in the public schools of Ohio but "from early boyhood he had entertained an idea to the effect that the practice of medicine and surgery would be to his liking. With that end in view he entered a course in the higher studies at the age of 15 and later graduated from the Medical department of the noted college at Ann Arbor, Michigan. In 1856, at the age of 25, he entered actively into the practice of his chosen progression, in which he continued up to the year 1900--almost 44 years," states Dr. Milner’s obituary in the Knoxville Journal dated 29 April, 1910.

On September 1, 1857, the subject of this sketch was united in marriage with Miss Jane Hare, daughter of the Rev. John Hare and Julia Hayes Hare at Summerfield, Ohio. Rev. Hare was a Methodist minister serving numerous congregations in the Summerfield, Ohio area.

In April 1868, Dr. Milner and family removed to Iowa and settled in Franklin Township, Marion County, and continued to reside at the old homestead 32 years. In 1900, they removed to Knoxville Township where he made his home until his death.

Dr. Milner was never united with any church; however, he was at one time an honored member of the Knights of Pythias lodge in Pleasantville.

"Practically everybody in the western half of Marion County knew and respected Dr. Milner. He was a man of broad ideas, strictly honest and straight forward in business affairs, and a neighbor, who could always be depended upon to render any desired aid or assistance within his power," states his obituary.

To the union of Asa Milner and Jane Hare 10 children were born, four who were born in Ohio prior to removing to Iowa. Asa Clyde Milner, longtime Knoxville businessman, owned Milner Cafe and later Milner Meat Market on the north side of the square in Knoxville in the 1920s and 1930s. He had farms on the north of Knoxville [today North Roche Street] as well as land off the "String Town Road." Cycle also owned the Marion Hotel at the time of his death in February 1968.

Dr. Asa Milner and wife, Jane Hare Milner (10/18/1838-5/6/1915) are buried at Lincoln Cemetery, west of Knoxville, Iowa in Marion County. There are also three sons; John, Charles and Seth buried there as well as Mrs. Milner’s brother, Beldon Hare.

    Children:

      1. Cora Milner Elliott, 8/4/1858-2/10/1948, married Henry Elliott, 2/26/1848-8/13/1929. Buried in Knoxville where they lived most of their life. Had two sons, Frank and Harry, both deceased, who were owners of Elliott Shoe Store in Knoxville for many years.

Both he and Gertie are buried in Graceland Cemetery in Knoxville.
      5. Charles W. Milner, born 9/6/1868 and died 1/1/1871 was the first of Dr. Asa and Jane Milner’s children to be born in Iowa. Buried at Lincoln Cemetery west of Knoxville, Iowa.
      6. Frank B. Milner, born August 30, 1871, in Marion County, Iowa. Frank went west after a disagreement with one of his sisters and settled somewhere in the San Diego area. Help is needed to trace this family line.
