Underground Railroad in Iowa - Marion County
For an overview of the Underground Railroad in Iowa, please see the main page for this project. This page focuses on the participants from Marion county. This county had only two participants (one in two roles) while other counties had significantly more; to see this, check out the "by county" inventory of individuals on the main page linked above. The list below gives the individuals and below them are descriptions of their roles.
- Jewett, George Anson (Red Rock) -- Anti-Slavery
- Jewett, George Anson (Red Rock) -- Conductors/Station Agents
- Rose Ann McGregor (Indiana Township) -- Reverse Kidnapping
- Anti-Slavery: One who disliked slavery but did not necessarily demand the immediate abolition of slavery. Individuals listed as anti-slavery were not known abolitionists.
- Conductor: One who worked as an Underground Railroad agent by moving fugitive slaves from one
point to another.
- Station Agent: One who worked as an Underground Railroad agent by hiding fugitive slaves in their
homes, barns, or elsewhere on their property. One could be both a conductor and a station agent
but not necessarily both.
- Reverse Underground Railroad Kidnapping: An occasional situation in Iowa in which slaves were kidnapped by Underground Railroad agents from their owners within the state of Iowa and sent along the Underground Railroad to freedom.
