Rhodam Bonnifield was born in Randolph County, Virginia, the son, of Samuel Bonnifield. He married Nancy Mineart (sic - MINEAR). In 1836 they set out for the Black Hawk purchase to make their home ..... The family made the trip in a "Virginia" schooner pulled by four horses. The women and children were transported in a spring wagon. They stopped at the town of Clayton, Ill., to spend the winter. In the early spring of 1837 part of the family came on to Jefferson County and erected a cabin in the northwest corner of Round Prairie Township. The remainder of the family arrived in May the same year.

During the winter of 1839-40, five members of the Bonnifield family passed away as an epidemic of cholera or some other disease swept through the country. Those who died during the epidemic included Rhodam Bonnifield, his wife, Nancy, an older son, Arnold, and two married daughters, Sara and Elizabeth. A grandson is also buried in the plot.

The burial plot in which the six members of the family are buried is located about 2-1/2 miles southeast of Glendale along the north edge of Round Prairie Township (ed. note - and in the southwest corner of Lockridge Township). The original location of the cabin is about a half mile further east on the south side of the road. The site is on a knoll overlooking rolling ground in all directions.....
