Born: September 2, 1866 in Colfax, Jasper Co., Iowa CELEBRATED SILVER WEDDING ANNIVERSARY YESTERDAYMr. and Mrs. U. G. Hickman, of Mound Prairie township, celebrated their silver wedding anniversary yesterday and sixty-five guests enjoyed their warm hospitality at their new home. An elegant three course dinner was served at noon by the daughters, Mamie, Gladys and Florence. The afternoon was delightfully informal and some very good music was enjoyed. Mr. and Mrs. Hickman received many beautiful gifts and the heartiest congratulations of their host of friends. The guests from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Kartchner and two children from north of Colfax and Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Veach of Newton. ~ The Newton Daily News, April 6, 1912 Mrs. Hickman, 73, Succumbs This MorningMrs. Dora Ellen Hickman, aged 73 years, died at 3:15 a.m. this morning at 702 First avenue East at the Charles Davis home where she had been living for the past year. She suffered a stroke a year ago in September and since that time her health had been falling. Born Sept. 2, 1866, in Jasper county, she had made her home in this county all her life with the exception of one year in Wyoming. She was the daughter of Burton and Nancy Hurst. Surviving children are Mrs. Frank Krohn of Colfax, Mrs. Steve Harrington of Kellogg. Mrs. Gladys Horn of Davenport, Mrs. LeRoy Goeke and Morris Hickman of Newton and Mrs. Charles Rutherford of Grinnell and two grandsons. A son, Lawrence, and her husband, U. G. Hickman, preceded her in death. Mr. Hickman died in April, 1938. ~ The Newton Daily News, October 19, 1939. __________Hold Final Rites For Mrs. HickmanFinal rites for Mrs. Dora Hickman, 73, were conducted at Cutter-Hartnett chapel in Colfax Saturday afternoon with ? Gray of Mingo in charge. Pallbearers were Jack Marshall, Orville Nearmeyer, Carl Kletting, John Clymer, William Clymer, and Merle Van Gilder. Interment was in the Sugar Grove cemetery in Metz. Music was furnished by Mr. Charles Davis, Mrs. Earl? accompanied by Mrs. Sayer ? of Newton. Mrs. Merle Van ? and Alida Westerwoudt were in charge of floral arrangements. Mrs. Dora Ellen Hickman, daughter of Burton and Nancy Hurst was born near Colfax, Ia. in 1866, and died in Newton in 1939, being 73 years, 1 month and 17 days old at the time of death. She lived near Colfax ? was grown. On April 5, 1887 was united in marriage to U. G. Hickman, and they lived all their married life in Jasper county except two years spent in Wyoming. To this union were born 7 children. A son, Lawrence, preceding them in death in 1916; her husband preceded her April, 1938. Children who survive are Mrs. Frank Krohn of Colfax. Mrs. Steve Harrington of Kellogg, Mrs. Gladys Horn of Davenport, Mrs. LeRoy Goeke of Newton, Mrs. Charles Rutherford of Grinnell and Morris Hickman of Newton; also two grandsons, Attorney Frank Krohn, Jr., of Newton and Harold Hickman of Newton, three sisters and two brothers. ~ The Newton Daily News, October 24, 1939. |
