All vital events occurring in the state such as birth, death, and marriage, and the bureau has an interstate exchange agreement with all of the other states. The bureau registers approximately 100,000 events and issues about 85,000 certified copies annually.

In Iowa, official registration of births, deaths, and marriages began July 1, 1880. All original records that have been registered are on file with the Iowa Department of Public Health, Bureau of Vital Statistics.

Howard-Winneshiek Genealogy Society

The Howard-Winneshiek Genealogy Society houses many Howard County records in the Cresco Public Library. Check the list to see if there is something of interst for you. The library is open Monday through Thursday 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Friday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Research in the Cresco Library is free, the only cost is for xerox copies or copies from the microfilm reader/printer. There are newspaper indexes for most of the Cresco papers (more are being done at the present time). Some of the indexes for the Plain Dealer may be found on the History/Records page. If you are interested in having a copy of the actual article in the newspaper, contact Janice Sowers.

The Society does genealogy research for $5.00 an hour, plus copies and postage. Lookups are free.
