The German Township Cemetery is one of the earliest cemeteries established in the county, with the earliest known burial being in 1863 and the latest being in 1900. A school used to sit adjacent to this location. As was the case with a lot of country schools, the building was also used as a church. This was the origins of St. Peter's Evangelical Church. In the early 1870's a tornado destroyed the building. In 1874, the parishoners of St. Peter's then rebuilt their church about 2 miles east of this location. By this fact, some families are split between this cemetery and the St. Peter's cemetery. Current information has 42 persons laid to rest in this cemetery. Rick Gersema found the original church/burial records of St. Peter's and compiled this list of burials.
This cemetery has been neglected over the years and has become overgrown. Today, only 10 stones remain. The WPA has only 6 of these recorded. The cemetery is now under the care of the township.
