Brookfield Township

The following history is from the Clinton Herald, July 4, 1976:

When first organized, this township encompassed what is now Bloomfield, Berlin and Welton Townships and contained only six voters.

Elwood began as a town in 1871, a by-product of the Sabula, Ackley and Dakota railroad line.  The community received a shot in the arm from the creamery which operated there for a long time.  The post office was set up in 1872.

(Established 1856)

TOWNS

  • Brookfield Center: 21 Nov 1871 - 12 Dec 1871. Renamed Elwood; moved from Section 21 to Section 16
  • Elwood: 12 Dec 1871 - Current

The web page that Scott Ketelsen referred to recently (website and photo are no longer there) actually has a picture of my grandfather Dr. William H. Presnell surrounded by Ketelsen kids; he was the doctor for a sizable chunk of the county and delivered many Clinton Co. residents (older than about 35) when they were born. He had a small doctor office in the town where my grandparents lived, Charlotte (between Delmar and Goose Lake I think).  Thanks, Tom
