FORGOTTEN in many histories of the Civil War is the role of the Regular Army during the War Between the States. After the close of the Mexican War and the disbandment of the volunteer forces called out by that war, the regular troops had been gradually decreasing in numbers, and at the beginning of the Rebellion in 1861, were scattered by companies and detachments throughout the country. If your ancestor served in the regular U.S. Army, you may find him on the US regulars website. This is a very complete and informative site and there is no need for us to duplicate their efforts.
