FOURTH BATTERY IOWA LIGHT ARTILLERY

HISTORICAL SKETCH

The Fourth Iowa Battery was mustered into the service of the United States at Davenport,

Iowa, on November 23, 1863. Its muster-in roll contains the names of one hundred fifty-two

men, rank and The.' The official records

show that the battery was first assigned to service on the northern frontier, and that it was

associated with the troops under the command of General Sully, engaged in the protection of the

settlers against incursions of the hostile tribes of Indians. While engaged in this service, the

battery performed garrison duty, and there is no record of its having come into direct conflict

with the Indians. It faithfully discharged the duty to which it was assigned, however, and thus

assisted in guarding the frontier until February, 1864. It was then ordered South, going first to

New Orleans, where it was again assigned to garrison duty, and continued in the discharge of

that duty at New Orleans and. at other military posts during its entire term of service.

The battery was well equipped for active service in the field It was composed of good and

true-men, a number of whom had seen service in other Iowa military organizations. It had a

capable and efficient set of officers, and only lacked the opportunity of meeting the enemy in

actual conflict, in order to have enabled it to establish a record of valor and courage equal to that

made by the other three batteries which the State of Iowa sent into the field. Lacking such

opportunity, it nevertheless rendered important service at the various posts to which it was

assigned. In its comparatively brief term of service and in the limited sphere to which its

operations were confined it obeyed every order which it received, and is, therefore, entitled to the

credit of having done an that was required of it by the different Generals under whose command

it served.

A brief summary of the history and service of each of the military organizations in the armies

of the United States, during the period from 1861 to 1865, is contained in "Dyer's Compendium

of the War of the Rebellion," from which the following quotation—relating to the Fourth Iowa

Battery—is made:

"Organized at Davenport, November 23, 1863. Attached to the Department of the Northwest

to February, 1864. Defenses of New Orleans, Department of the Gulf, to June, 1864. District of

LaFourche, Department of the Gulf, to July, 1865

Service—Garrison duty in the Department of the Northwest, until February, 1864. Ordered to

New Orleans, La., and assigned to duty in the defenses of that city, and at Thibodeaux, La.,

District of LaFourche, until July, 1865. Mustered out July 14, 1865." 2

The foregoing condensed statement embraces all the history that is obtainable of the service

of the battery. No details are given in the reports of its officers on file in the office of the

Adjutant General of Iowa, except as to the changes noted in the monthly returns, and entered

upon the records, including the deaths from disease, the discharges for disability or from

whatever cause, and promotions of its commissioned and non-commissioned officers and

privates. Additional enlistments are also reported, and, therefore, the subjoined roster—carefully

transcribed from the records—contains all that can be found with reference to each man whose

name was at any time borne upon the rolls of the battery. As heretofore stated, the Fourth Iowa

Battery performed faithful service, doing all that was required of it, and it is, therefore, entitled to

an honorable place in the history of Iowa soldiers.
