Roster and Record of Iowa Troops In the Rebellion, Vol. 5

By Guy E. Logan

HISTORICAL SKETCH

FORTY-SIXTH REGIMENT IOWA VOLUNTEER INFANTRY

The ten companies of which the Forty-sixth Regiment of Iowa Volunteer Infantry was

composed were enrolled in the following named counties: Company A, in Dubuque; Company

B, in Poweshiek; Company C, in Dallas; Company G, in Monroe; Company I, in Cedar;

Company K, in Lucas; Company D, in Taylor and Fayette; Company E, in Linn and Ringgold;

Company F, in Delaware and Winneshiek, and Company H, in Wayne and Clark. While the

counties named are mentioned at the foot of each roster as those in which the different

companies were enrolled, an examination of the different rosters reveals the feet that there were a

large number of other counties represented in the regiment. The short time allowed for recruiting

the one hundred day regiments, and the fact that the State of Iowa had already furnished more

troops for the Union armies than the filling of her quota required, rendered it necessary to

practically cover the entire State, in order to raise the number of men needed and to place them

in the field as quickly as possible.

The records show that nine of the companies of the Forty-sixth Iowa were ordered into

quarters by the Governor, on April 25,1864, and the tenth company (G) received its orders on

May 30, 1864. The designated rendezvous was Camp McClellan, near Davenport, Iowa, and

there, on June 10, 1864, the organization of the regiment was completed, and it was mustered

into the service of the United States by Captain Alexander Chambers, of the Regular Army. The

original muster-in rolls contain the names of eight hundred ninety-two men—rank and file. 1

Four days later—on June 14th—the regiment was on its way to the South. It will thus be seen

that but little opportunity had been given to the officers and men to prepare themselves for the

important work before them. It was their good fortune, however, to have been placed under the

command of an officer of great ability. Colonel David B. Henderson had entered the service with

the Twelfth Regiment of Iowa Infantry, in September, 1861. He had won honor and distinction in

the battles of Fort Donelson and Corinth, in both of which he was severely wounded. Having

partially recovered from his wounds, he felt that he was able to discharge the duties of a field

officer, and, upon tendering his services to the Governor, was appointed Colonel of the Fortysixth

Iowa. He was the only one of the Colonels of the one hundred day regiments who furnished

the Adjutant General of Iowa with a detailed report of the operations of his regiment. His report

was written after the regiment had been mustered out of the service but may, nevertheless, be

regarded as official for the reason that it was submitted in compliance with the personal request

of Adjutant General N. B. Baker and was published him, in his official report covering the

operations of Iowa troops for the year 1864. It reads as follows:

l Report of Adjutant General of Iowa 1866, Vol. 1. pages 122 to 151 Inclusive. Original roster of

the regiment.

2 The previous military record of this gallant officer is given in the Historical Sketch and

Revised Roster of the Twelfth Iowa Infantry, contained In Vol. I1, of this work, pages 410 and

467. For many years after the close of the war, Colonel D. B. Henderson was the foremost

member of the Iowa delegation in the Congress of the United States. He was elected Sneaker of

the House, and discharged the duties of that high office with great ability for many years. He

2

voluntarily retired from Congress on account of failing health, and died at his home In Dubuque,

Feb. 25, 1906. His death was deeply lamented by all the people of Iowa.

DUBUQUE, IOWA, OCT. 8, 1864.

General: In compliance with your requests of the 16th ult., I would respectfully submit the

following brief history of the Forty-sixth Regiment Iowa Infantry Volunteers.

The Forty-sixth Regiment was organized at Davenport, Iowa. and mustered into the United

States service on the 10th day of June, 1864, to serve for the term of one hundred days. On the

11th of June the regiment was armed and clothed. and, on the 14th, we took the cars for Cairo,

Ill., in which place we arrived on the 15th. Immediately upon my arrival in Cairo, I dispatched a

letter to Major General Wasburn, commanding at Memphis, and on the morning of the 17th of

June, I received orders from General Washburn to report with my regiment at Memphis. On the

evening of the 17th of June, I embarked the regiment upon the "John D. Perry" and arrived in

Memphis on the morning of the 20th, when I was ordered into camp two miles east of the city.

We remained in camp at Memphis until the 27th, performing heavy picket duty during that time.

On the morning of the 20th, when I was ordered into camp two miles east of the city. We

remained in camp at Memphis until the 27th, performing heavy picket duty during that time.

On the morning of the 27th of June, I was ordered to move my regiment to Collierville,

Tenn., take command of that post and throw out detachments east and west on the railroad, and

was also ordered to guard the railroad against the interference of the rebels, who had recently

been firing upon the trains in the vicinity of Collierville. On the 28th of June, I sent Lieutenant

Colonel L. D. Durbin, with two companies—A and I—Captains Guilbert and Wolf, to Camp

Look Out, a post three miles west of Collierville. and situated on the Memphis and Cincinnati

Railroad. On the same day, Major George L. Torbert, with companies E and K, Captains

Harrison and Palmer, moved to Camp Henderson, two and a half miles east of Collierville. Both

of these detachments performed their duties faithfully, and not another train was disturbed while

they guarded these posts. While the regiment was stationed at Collierville and outposts. the men

performed very heavy picket duty, being upon guard each alternate day. I partially compensated

the men for this by inaugurating a generous system of foraging.

The enemy disturbed us but once during the two months that we were stationed at

Collierville. The event that I allude to occurred about the middle of August Lieutenant Colonel

Durbin was informed that a band of guerrillas had captured two men of the Sixth Illinois

Cavalry, near his camp. He promptly sent out Captain Wolf with sixteen men, to rescue the

prisoners, if possible. When about a mile from camp, the party was fired upon by some thirty

guerrillas lying in ambuscade, and Captain Wolf and three of his men were brought down at the

next volley, the Captain and one man seriously wounded, the others slightly. The men returned

the fire, killing one and wounding three of the rebels. The Captain having been shot and

supposed to be killed, and being outnumbered two to one, the men retreated to camp.

On the 1st of September we were ordered to Memphis, where we remained until the 10th

when we were ordered to embark on the "Golden Era" for Cairo, at which place we arrived on

the 14th of September. Taking the cars the same day, we started for Davenport, Iowa. On the

evening of September 16th we reached Davenport, in which place we were mustered out and

paid off on September 23, 1964

Very respectfully, your obedient servant,

D. B HENDERSON, Colonel.

GENERAL N. B. BAKER. 3

3 Report of Adjutant General of Iowa, 1865, Vol. 2, pages 129, 3

It will thus be seen that the general character of the service performed by the Forty-sixth

Iowa was much the same as that of the other one hundred day regiments from Iowa. It had

moved promptly to the posts of duty to which it was assigned, had acquitted itself most

creditably, and had rendered such important service as to deserve and receive the thanks of the

President. At the time the regiment returned to Iowa, the great rebellion was everywhere tottering

to its fall. A few months later there was no large body of armed rebels in existence. The plans of

President Lincoln and General Grant had been successfully accomplished, and the war-worn

veterans, who had fought so valiantly for the preservation of the Union, were being gradually

disbanded and permitted to return to their homes. While it took long years to bring about a

complete reconciliation between the people of the States which had been engaged in rebellion

and of those which had adhered to the cause of the Union, the time has finally come when only

the valor of American Soldiers, of both the North and the South. is remembered and cherished,

and abiding peace and good will prevails throughout the land.
