HISTORICAL SKETCH
FORTY-FIRST IOWA VOLUNTEER INFANTRY
When the Fourteenth Regiment of Iowa Infantry was organized, three of its companies: A,
B and C, were detached from the regiment and sent to Fort Randall, to garrison that post and
relieve United States troops. At the date of their transfer, these companies had an aggregate
strength of two hundred sixty-seven. l Subsequently these three companies were permanently
detached from the Fourteenth Regiment, and three new companies were organized to take their
places in that regiment. The companies thus detached constituted an Infantry Battalion, which
was intended to be the nucleus of the Forty-first Regiment of Iowa Infantry. The completion of
the organization of that regiment was subsequently abandoned, and, when the Seventh Regiment
of Iowa Cavalry was organized, the Forty-first Iowa Infantry Battalion was assigned to, and
became a part of, that regiment, in compliance with the requirements of General Orders No. 116,
from the Adjutant General of the State of Iowa, which reads, in part, as follows:

In accordance with the authority of the War Department, granted to the Governor of this
State, the Sioux City Cavalry, and the three companies composing the Battalion of the Forty-first
Infantry, now in Dakota Territory, are hereby transferred from said organization to the Seventh
Iowa Cavalry, and will compose a Battalion of said Seventh Cavalry." 2
Prior to the issuance of the foregoing order, the three companies, composing the Battalion of
the Forty-first Infantry, had made a record of their own, which is preserved in the official reports
on file in the office of the Adjutant General of Iowa, and from which the compiler is enabled to
present the following summary of the operations of the Battalion, while it remained a separate
and distinct military organization.
After their muster into the service of the United States, at Iowa City, in the early part of
October, 1861, Companies A, B and C, of the Fourteenth Regiment Iowa Volunteer Infantry,
were ordered to proceed to Fort Randall, Dakota Territory, and, upon their arrival at that poet, to
relieve the garrison, composed of troops of the Regular Army, then on duty at the Fort. The
three companies left their camp near Iowa City on November 2, 1861, and marched, by way of
Des Moines, Council Bluffs and Sioux City, Iowa, to Fort Randall arriving at the latter place
December 6, 1861, having marched five hundred fifty miles in thirty-five days, an average of
nearly sixteen miles a day, including halts, thus estab-

lishing a marching record which would
have done credit to veteran troops. This preliminary experience proved valuable, as it fitted the
men for their subsequent hard marching in the campaigns against the Indians. Fort Randall was
an important military post, constituting the headquarters and base of supplies for all the troops
operating against the Indians, on that portion of the northwestern frontier. At the time of its
occupation by the Iowa troops, the Fort was under the Jurisdiction of the Military Department of
Kansas, but was later changed to the Department of the Northwest, District of Iowa.
From the time these three companies of the Fourteenth Iowa left the State of Iowa, they were
under the command of Captain John Pattee, the senior officer in rank. When his detachment
reached Fort Randall and relieved the garrison of regular troops, Captain Pattee succeeded to the
command of the post. In addition to the ordinary post and garrison duty, some portions of the
command were more or less constantly engaged in co-operating with the cavalry in the work of
scouting and keeping watch upon the movements of roving bands of hostile Indians, and thus
protecting, in so far as it was possible, the homes of the settlers. On June 2, 1862, a portion of
Captain Pattee's command formed part of an extended scout, covering a distance of over two
hundred miles before returning to the Fort.

On September 18, 1862, the three companies were transferred from the Fourteenth Iowa
Infantry, and received the official designation of the Forty-first Iowa Infantry Battalion. Captain
John Pattee was promoted to the rank of Major, and continued in command of the new
organization. The Battalion remained at Fort Randall and continued in the discharge of the duties
heretofore described until April, 1863, when the order, heretofore quoted, was issued,
transferring the Battalion to the Seventh Iowa Cavalry and changing the company designations to
K, L and M, of that regiment. The subjoined roster contain the names of all the officers and men
who belonged to the three companies prior to their last transfer, and the changes and casualties
will there be found noted. Their subsequent history is embraced in that of the Seventh Iowa
Cavalry, contained in Volume IV of this work, and, in the roster following the historical sketch
of that regiment, the changes and casualties which occurred after their transfer will also be found
noted. This latter history shows a record of splendid service, and, in its entirety, the report of
these officers and men, which began with the fourteenth Iowa Infantry and ended with the
Seventh Iowa Cavalry, is altogether an honorable one. Had they been permitted to remain with
the regiment with which they were originally enrolled, they would have shared in its glorious
battle record, and there would have been a much smaller number of them left to return to their
homes at the close of the war. It was no fault of theirs, however, that they were kept in the North,
and assigned to a field of service where no great battles were fought. They had the satisfaction of
knowing that they helped to save the lives of many men, women and children, and kept the
savage tribes of Indiana from desolating the northern frontier. The wide extent of country over
which they marched and fought is now covered with the homes of a happy and prosperous
people, many of whom are the descendants of those early pioneers who braved the dangers and
hardships which confronted them, and who deserve the gratitude of those who have

beneficiaries of their struggles to wrest that fair region of the country from the control of the
nomadic tribes, and to make it the fit abode of a highly civilized and enlightened people.
