Roster and Record of Iowa Troops In the Rebellion, Vol.

HISTORICAL SKETCH
THIRTY-SIXTH REGIMENT IOWA VOLUNTEER INFANTRY
The Thirty-sixth Regiment was organized under the proclamation of President Lincoln,
issued July 2,1862, in which the Governors of the Northern States were called upon to furnish
additional troops for the suppression of the Rebellion. The ten companies of which the regiment
was composed were recruited in the southeast part of the State, and were ordered by Governor
Kirkwood to assemble at Camp Lincoln, near Keokuk, Iowa, the dates of the orders ranging from
August 9, to September 8, 1862. The organization was completed, and the companies, together
with the field and staff officers, were mustered into the service of the United States on the 4th
day of October, 1862, by Lieutenant Charles J. Ball, of the Regular Army. The aggregate
strength of the regiment (including early additional enlistments) was nine hundred eighty-six
men, rank and file. Governor Kirkwood had selected Charles W. Kittredge as Colonel and
commanding officer of the regiment. This officer had formerly served as Captain of Company F,
Seventh Iowa Infantry, had participated in the battle of Belmont—in which he received a severe
wound—and was especially mentioned in the official report of Colonel Lauman for gallantry and
meritorious conduct. The other field, staff and line officers of the regiment were all capable men,
and entered upon the discharge of their duties with zeal and earnestness. Reference to the
original roster reveals the fact that both the officers and enlisted men were of an average age
considerably in excess of that shown by the rosters of the Iowa regiments which had entered the
service at the commencement of the war. It may, therefore, be inferred that there was a larger
proportion of married men in the regiment than among those who had enrolled themselves in the
earlier days of the war. No less patriotic than the younger men who had preceded them, they had
remained with their families until the call to arms became imperative, and they were then ready
to make the sacrifice, and to go forth to fight, and to die, if need be, for their country. The history
of the regiment can only be given in a condensed form, but it will be the endeavor of the
compiler to cover all the leading and most important features of its service. While the regiment
remained in its rendezvous, near Keokuk, Iowa, there was considerable sickness among the men,
and quite a number of deaths occurred, as will be seen from the casualties noted in the subjoined
roster. 2
1 Report of Adjutant General of Iowa, 1863, Vol. 1, Pages X and XIV. also 1863 Vol. 2, pages
164 to 131 inclusive, showing the original roster of the regiment at the date of its muster into the
service.
2 In the subjoined roster will be found the names of all the Officers and enlisted men of the
regiment who were killed in battle, or who died from wounds or disease also of all who were
discharged for disability or from whatever cause. The roster has been compiled from the official
records, and contains the names of all who at any time belonged to the regiment, with such
personal record of service noted opposite each name as could be obtained from the official
reports and returns of the officers upon the books of record in his office.
In the latter part of November, 1862, the regiment embarked on transports and was conveyed
to St. Louis, Mo. where it was assigned to quarters at Benton Barracks, where troops Were being
constantly concentrated and fitted for active service in
the field. The regiment remained at
2
Benton Barracks until December 19,1862, upon which date it again embarked and proceeded
down the river. It was. detained for a short time at Columbus, Ky., for the purpose of reinforcing
the garrison at that place, and to aid in repelling a threatened attack of the enemy. The attack was
not made and, when it was ascertained that the rebel force had withdrawn, the regiment
proceeded down the river to Memphis, Tenn. Upon its arrival at Memphis, the regiment was
assigned to quarters at Fort Pickering, where it remained until December 30, 1862, upon which
date it again embarked, and was conveyed to Helena, Ark., where it arrived and went into camp
on January 1, 1863. The principal movements and operations of the regiment, from the date of its
arrival at Helena to the close of the year 1863, are described in the official reports of Colonel
Kittredge, from which the compiler makes the following quotation omitting the least important
details and condensing somewhat from the original—without changing its purport—on account
of limitation of space:
3 Report of Adjutant General of Iowa, 1864, pages 601 to 504 Inclusive. Official Reports of
Colonel Kittredge, Thirty-sixth Iowa Infantry.
The regiment remained in camp, on the river bank below the town, until the expedition,
under command of General Gorman, left for White River, when I was ordered by Colonel Cyrus
Bussey, who had assumed command at Helena, into the barracks surrounding Fort Curtis, ours
being the only regiment of infantry left at the post. Our duties were here necessarily severe.
Upon the return of the expedition from White River, I was ordered to report to General Fisk,
having been assigned to his command. We remained in the barracks at Fort Curtis until February
24th, when we left on the Yazoo Pass Expedition. Although the regiment had suffered much
from the diseases Incident to the climate and to new soldiers, we started upon this expedition
with six hundred enlisted men, leaving our sick and convalescent in hospital and camp, at
Helena. The regiment embarked upon two small steamers, the right wing being under my
immediate command, and the left wing under the command of Lieutenant Colonel F. M. Drake.
The navigation of the pass, and the Coldwater and Tallahatchee Rivers, was difficult and tedious,
owing to the narrow and crooked streams, and the overhanging branches of trees, which had to
be cut away before the boats could proceed. We were fired into on several occasions but suffered
no casualties, except the wounding of Private J. W. S. Bland in the head. We arrived at Shell
Mound, on the Tallahatchee River, about two miles above Fort Pemberton, at noon, March 11th,
and were immediately ordered ashore, and formed in line of battle to support two regiments of
General Salomon's Brigade, who were skirmishing with the enemy. We remained about two
hours under fire, when we were ordered back to the boats. I am happy to say that on this
occasion—the first time that the regiment had met the enemy—its Officers and men manifested
the coolness and courage of veterans. We remained at Shell Mound doing heavy guard duty and
some skirmishing, until April 4th.... The enterprise of reducing Fort Pemberton was abandoned,
and we returned to Helena, Ark., arriving there April 8, 1863. We were fired into several times
on the return trip. Sergeant Bay, of Company A, was severely wounded, and Privates Skinner,
Company E, Nickel, Company A, and McGlasson, Company B, were slightly wounded. The
regiment suffered severely while upon this expedition from sickness. Ten men died, and many
were rendered unfit for duty for months. We went into camp at Helena, where we remained,
doing guard and fatigue duty and perfecting ourselves in drill, until July 4, 1863. On that
morning and for several mornings previous, we were in line of battle at daylight. About 4 o'clock
on the morning of July 4th, the signal gun was fired, when the regiment at once marched to the
bluffs surrounding the city, by order of Colonel S. A. Rice, commanding the brigade, and at once
became engaged with the enemy. The battle lasted until 12
o'clock M., when the enemy was
3
repulsed. The regiment remained on the field until about 11 o'clock A. M., on July 5th, when It
returned to camp, but only to be ordered back, the signal gun again giving the alarm. We again
spent the night upon the field, and until nearly 12 o'clock M., of July 6th, when it became evident
that the enemy was In full retreat toward Little Rock.
Colonel Thomas H. Benton Jr., of the Twenty-ninth Iowa Infantry, makes reference in his
official report to the Thirty- sixth Iowa, as follows: "My regiment was promptly supported by the
Thirty-sixth Iowa Infantry, commanded by Colonel Kittredge, and was relieved by him a short
time before the enemy left the field." The reports all show that the Thirty-sixth Iowa performed
important service in the battle of Helena. While its casualties were not as great as those of the
other Iowa regiments engaged in that battle, owing to the positions it was ordered to occupy, it
performed its whole duty, obeyed the orders it received, and is, therefore, entitled to its full share
of credit for the gallant defense of that important post. In his congratulatory order, Colonel
Kittredge says: " . . . Your commanding officer is happy- in expressing his admiration of your
gallant conduct, . . . and congratulates you upon the splendid victory your valor helped to win on
the 4th of July, 1863." Special mention is made of the valuable services of Chaplain Hare and
Regimental Quartermaster Morrill, they being the only field and staff officers present, the others
being absent on account of sickness. 5
4 The casualties of the regiment in the battle of Helena are given In the report by Colonel
Kittredge heretofore referred to, and will also be found noted In the subjoined roster. See footnotes
Nos. 2 and 3.
5 Report of Adjutant General of Iowa, 1864, pages 491 and 501, 2.
The operations of the regiment, for the remainder of the year 1863, may be briefly
summarized as follows: It remained in camp at Helena until August 11th, when it joined in the
expedition against Little Rock, under the command of General Steele. After a fatiguing march, in
which the cavalry division, under General Davidson, took the advance, General Steele's army
arrived in the vicinity of Little Rock on September 10th. The Thirty-sixth Iowa was the leading
regiment in General Rice's infantry division, which followed close upon the cavalry and fully
expected to participate in the engagement which ensued, but the enemy gave way before the
impetuous charge of the cavalry, and the works and city were captured without the infantry being
called into action. General Steele's army then went into camp, in and around the city. It should be
here stated that Major Woodward had resigned—on account of sickness—on June 2, 1863, and
that Adjutant Hamilton was promoted to Major June 3, 1863. At the time the regiment left
Helena, Colonel Kittredge had been assigned to the command of the brigade to which his
regiment was attached, and Captain Varner, of Company A, was in command of the regiment,
until Lieutenant Colonel Drake—who had been absent on account of sickness—returned and
assumed command, before the regiment reached Little Rock. Major Hamilton rejoined the
regiment at Devall's Bluff, and Captains Varner and Webb and Lieutenant Spooner were given
leave of absence, on account of sickness. All three of these officers died before reaching their
homes In Iowa. Such was the sad fate of many officers and mend of the Iowa regiments who, had
they succeeded in reaching their homes, might have been restored to health and strength. From
the date of its organization to the time it arrived at Little Rock, the casualties in the regiment—
caused by sickness—had been far greater than those which resulted from conflict with the
enemy. It had been almost all the time in unhealthy localities, and the skill and attention of its
medical staff, with the best provision that could be made in its field hospital for the care of the
sick, had not availed to prevent a large number of deaths, and a still larger number from being
rendered incapacitated for further service. The encampment
of the regiment at Little Rock—on
4
high ground near the City—was a great improvement over any it had previously occupied and
the marked decrease in sickness, and the more rapid recovery of health greatly relieved the
depression of spirits which had prevailed among the officers and men. Comfortable Winter
quarters had been constructed, and great care had been taken to make the sanitary conditions as
nearly perfect as was possible. On the 9th of December, 1863, Surgeon Joseph R. Smith, the
medical director of General Steele's army, after making a careful inspection of the camp, said:
"The camp of the Thirty-sixth Regiment Iowa Infantry is now a model of order, cleanliness and
comfort. In a division where all surgeons do their duty, it may well be a source of pride to have
acquired the pre-eminence. 6 Such commendation of the efforts of Colonel Kittredge and
Surgeon Strong, to make the most of the improved conditions of location and climate, was very
encouraging, and had an excellent effect throughout the entire command. At the close of his
report Colonel Kittredge states that he encloses the consolidated morning report of the regiment,
on December 31, 1863. He also states that he has caused monthly reports to be regularly mailed
to the Adjutant General of Iowa, since the organization of the regiment. These statements
indicate that great care was taken to preserve the material from which the correct history of the
regiment might subsequently be compiled. 7
6 Report of Adjutant General of Iowa, 1864, pages 502, 3.
7 The reliability of this history and the subjoined roster of the regiment is based upon the
correctness of such official reports. In the preparation of this and the other historical sketches of
Iowa military organizations the compiler has adhered strictly to the official reports and records,
which he believes are - in the main - as nearly correct as it was possible to make them.
The operations of the regiment, during the year 1864, constitute the most important period of
its history. The official records tell the story of its hardships and sufferings only in part, for
during that period the greater portion of its officers and men - who had survived its most
desperate conflict with the enemy - endured and suffered the horrors of imprisonment, which no
language is adequate to fully describe. The official account of this period of the service of the
regiment was written by Lieutenant Colonel Drake who - when Colonel Kittredge was disabled
by sickness - succeeded to the command of the regiment. There is no more complete and
comprehensive history of the operations of any one of the Iowa regiments than that which is
contained in the series of any one of the Iowa regiments than that which is contained in the series
of reports of Lieutenant Colonel Drake, while he was in command of the Thirty-sixth Iowa and
of the brigade to which it was attached. 8 The one which the compiler has selected for inclusion
in this sketch describes - in a general way - all the important operations in which the regiment
took part during the period indicated, and is here given entire, as follows:
8 The reports referred to are found on pages 1251 to 1259 inclusive, of the Report of the
Adjutant General for the year 1866. The latter report Is the one which is quoted entire, limitation
of space preventing the inclusion of the others.
HEADQUARTERS THIRTY-SIXTH IOWA INFANTRY VOLUNTEERS.
LITTLE ROCK, ARK., Feb. 28, 1865.
N. B. BAKER,
Adjutant General of Iowa.
Sir: I have the honor to furnish herewith a brief history of this regiment for the year 1864.
During the months of January, February and most of March
we were encamped at Little Rock,
5
and received large accessions to our ranks - some two hundred recruits from Iowa. On the 23d of
March we left Little Rock on the Camden expedition, under Major General Steele, which was
designed to co-operate with Major General Banks, on the Red River expedition. We were
brigaded with the Forty-third Indiana and Seventy-seventh Ohio Infantry, Battery E, Second
Missouri Light Artillery, constituting the Second Brigade of the First Division, Seventh Army
Corps, and commanded by Colonel William E. McLean, of the Forty-third Indiana Infantry. Our
regiment, with three field officers, five staff and eighteen line officers, and six hundred enlisted
men present for duty, was - next to the Fiftieth Indiana of Brigadier General Rice's Brigade - the
largest infantry regiment connected with the expedition.
The expedition was, as you are aware, a very hard one and, in many respects, disastrous.
During this expedition the regiment participated in the battles of Elkin's Ford, Prairie D'Ane,
Camden, Mark's Mills, and Jenkin's Ferry, acquitting itself with honor in every battle, and at
Elkin's Ford and Mark's Mills with glory. At the battle of Elkin's Ford, on the 4th of April, the
regiment was divided: Colonel C. W. Kittredge commanding seven companies, and myself a
detachment of the Second Brigade, which included Companies A, D and G, commanded by
Captains Porter, Hale and Lee; this detachment, consisting of the three companies enumerated,
three companies of the Forty-third Indiana Infantry, four companies of the First Iowa Cavalry,
and two pieces of light artillery, met the attack of General Marmaduke's Division, three thousand
strong, and covered the front of our lines during the entire engagement, and until the enemy was
repulsed with fearful slaughter. The seven companies under Colonel Kittredge were conspicuous
among other troops engaged, and rendered efficient and gallant service.
From Elkin's Ford to Prairie D'Ane, a distance of about twelve miles, through dense timber,
ravines and hills, the advance of our army was a series of skirmishes. The enemy severely
contesting our movements, it took us nearly a week to make the distance from the skirts of
timber, on the crest of a series of high ridges, very formidable natural defenses, with fixed
batteries and a long line of rifle pits, from which it took three day's fighting to dislodge them. It
was here we learned of the sore disaster to General Bank's expedition, and found that the rebel
General Price's army - which confronted us - had been heavily reinforced by the armies of
Generals Kirby Smith and Dick Taylor, with a design to overwhelm and crush us entirely. By a
flank movement, General Steele succeeded in getting possession of the Camden and Washington
road, and our entire column moved in the direction of Camden. The enemy, taking another road
to our right, running parallel, moved in the same direction. At Poison Spring, sixteen miles south
of Camden, the two roads to our right, running parallel, moved in the same direction. At Poison
Spring, sixteen miles south of Camden, the two roads formed a junction. Here the advance of the
two armies again met, and a sanguinary battle ensued, followed by a running fight from there to
Camden, which place was captured by our forces, on the 15th of April. This regiment bore a
conspicuous part in these movements. Five companies of the regiment and a battery of light
artillery were detailed, under my command, to cover the rear of General Salomon's Division, and
held this junction, with no other support, from two o'clock until six o'clock P. M. until relieved
by Brigadier General Thayer with his division.
9 The Eighteenth Iowa suffered very heavy loss in the engagement referred to, but finally
succeeded in fighting its way through the ranks of the enemy and returning to Camden. The
colored regiment was completely routed and scattered and the entire train captured by the enemy.
See history of the Eighteenth Regiment Iowa Volunteer Infantry - continued in Vol. 3, of this
work - in which the engagement referred to is fully
described.
6
On the morning of April 18th, this regiment, under my command, with a squadron of cavalry,
by order of Brigadier General Salomon, moved, with forty government wagons loaded with corn,
to Britton's Mills, seven miles from Camden, took possession of the mills, and commenced
grinding corn. Our troops were then on one-fourth rations, and Camden was menaced by a rebel
force estimated at twenty thousand, with its headquarters seventeen miles from Camden. On this
day, General Steele's forage train of one hundred wagons, guarded by the Eighteenth Iowa
Infantry and the First Kansas, (the latter a colored regiment,) was cut to pieces and captured, in
full hearing of our camp, and my cavalry scouts were unable to proceed out of sight of my
flanks, without coming in collision with more numerous scouts of the enemy. 9 About dark the
rebel General Shelby, with his brigade and six pieces of artillery, moved up and encamped
within four miles of the Mills, and about midnight we received orders to evacuate our position
and return to Camden. We obeyed the order, returning all the corn, corn shellers and other
government property n good order, by daylight next morning. Matters with our army were now
beginning to assume a very dangerous and perilous aspect, and Camden being closely besieged
by rebel hordes, but we yet retained command of the Oachita River, across which we had a
pontoon bridge, and our only outlet was across it in our rear.
On the 20th of April General Steele was advised that the rebel General Shelby had forced a
passage, with his brigade, across the Oachita River, and, on the 22d, the Second Brigade and two
hundred and forty cavalry, with a train of two hundred and forty government wagons, were
ordered to Pine Bluff, for supplies. Colonels McLean, Mason and Kittredge being sick, I was
assigned to command the entire force, and the regiment was commanded by Major A. H.
Hamilton. We left the crossing of the Oachita River at daylight on the morning of the 23d, and
encountered Shelby's Brigade at noon, about twelve miles out, driving him In confusion from the
field On the morning of the 26th of April, the train was attacked while crossing Moro swamp, by
a rebel force under General Fagan, eight thousand strong, 10 and a terrible and bloody battle
ensued, at the junction of the Warren and Camden roads, near Mark's Mills. The battle lasted
until noon, the rebel force outnumbering us about six to one. We were not whipped. but finally
overpowered and captured, myself being severely wounded, and a large proportion of my
command either killed or wounded. The Thirty-sixth Iowa went into the fight with about five
hundred men, and lost, in killed and wounded, nearly two hundred men. The remainder are now
in prison at Tyler, Texas Among the killed was Lieutenant J. W. May, of Company F, one of the
most promising young officers in the service. Lieutenants Hurlburt and Wright and Captains
Porter and Lambert were among the wounded. A detachment of the regiment had been left at
Camden and, on General Steele s retreat, participated In the battle at Jenkins' Ferry, under the
command of Lieutenant G. R. Huston, of Company I, who was severely wounded, as were also
nine of his men, two of whom died. On the return of the expedition to Little Rock, about the 2d
of May, Colonel Kittredge commenced the difficult task of collecting together and reorganizing
the fragments of the regiment, embracing those who had been on detached duty, the
convalescents from hospitals, and those who had been so fortunate as to escape from the enemy
after being captured. At the battles of Mark s Mills and Jenkins' Ferry, all the books and papers
of the regiment had been lost or destroyed, and, with no Adjutant to assist him, the task was not
an easy one.
About the 1st of June, Colonel Kittredge was placed in command of the post of Little Rock,
and the command of the regiment devolved upon Captain W. F. Vermillion, of Company F, an
able and energetic officer, under whose command it remained until some time in October, when
the Captain was relieved by the return of Major Hamilton, who had escaped from the rebel
prison at Tyler, Texas. Colonel Kittredge again assumed command of the regiment some time In
November, and, about the 1st of December, was sent to
guard a mill on the Benton road, six
7
miles from Little Rock, where the regiment remained until January 1, 1866. I would fall to do
justice to the enlisted men of the regiment did I not commend them in the highest terms for their
marked good discipline and soldierly deportment during this period or its reduced and somewhat
disorganized condition, on account of the absence of so many of its officers. I rejoined the
regiment on the 1st day of October. and was exchanged on October 6th, but, not having then
sufficiently recovered from my wounds to dispense with the use of crutches, was assigned to
court-martial duty, from which service I have just been relieved, and returned to command the
regiment.
l0 Another report—referred to later in this sketch—states that the force of the enemy could not
have been less than 6,000. In his letter to General Baker, It will be noted that Lieutenant Colonel
Drake learned, while he was prisoner of war, that the enemy had 8,000 men engaged. See footnote
No. 13.
11 Report of Adjutant General of Iowa, 1866, Vol. 2, pages 1266 to 1259 inclusive.
I have the honor to be, very respectfully, your obedient servant,
F. M. DRAKE, Lieutenant Colonel,
Thirty-sixth Iowa Infantry, Commanding Regiment.
In his official report of the battle of Mark's Mills, Lieutenant Colonel Drake gives the
number of his command as closely approximating fifteen hundred, and estimates that of the
enemy at not less than six thousand. 11 He states that only one hundred fifty of his command
escaped, the rest—including the wounded—being made prisoners. The killed and wounded of his
command numbered about two hundred fifty, while the killed and wounded of the enemy
exceeded that number, a6 was subsequently learned by those who were taken prisoners. He also
states that the number of dead and wounded upon the field was between eight and nine hundred.
A large number of the killed were negroes and Arkansas refugees, who accompanied the
command, among them his own negro servant. He especially mentions the gallantry of Major
Hamilton, and commends all the officers and men of his own, and the other regiments engaged,
for their good conduct, and the bravery and fortitude which they displayed in the face of the
overwhelming numbers of the enemy, continuing to fight until their ammunition was exhausted,
and then conducting a hand to hand fight until borne down by sheer weight of numbers and
compelled to surrender. No greater gallantry was shown upon any battlefield of the war.
Surgeons Strong and Smith and Chaplain Hare were among the officers captured, and they
continued to care for the sick and wounded—as best they could—while in prison.
From the official report of Colonel William E. McLean, of the Forty-third Regiment Indiana
Infantry, who commanded the brigade to which the Thirty-sixth Iowa was attached, at the battle
of Elkin's Ford, the following extracts are taken:
. . On the evening of April 3d, being satisfied that the enemy were in our front in force, and
designed attacking us during the night or early next morning, I ordered Lieutenant Colonel
Drake, Thirty-sixth Iowa Infantry, to proceed with three companies of that regiment and three
companies of the Forty-third Indiana, to a position on the main road leading from the ford
immediately in our front to deploy his men on the right and left of the road, watch the
movements of the enemy, and resist their approach as ion as it was prudent, and to retire to the
reserves when they approached in force. One section of artillery, under Lieutenant Peetz, was
planted so as to fully command the road and the leading
approaches on our right and left. At six
8
o'clock on the morning of the 4th, the enemy approached In force and commenced an attack on
these advanced companies, who resisted them gallantly for nearly two hours, being well
supported by the artillery of Lieutenant Peetz. Too much praise cannot be awarded Lieutenant
Colonel Drake for the very distinguished gallantry and determined courage he exhibited during
all this contest. His report, giving a detailed statement of the disposition of his forces and their
engagement with the enemy, is submitted herewith. The capture by his forces early in the
morning of a rebel Lieutenant—an Aid-de-Camp of General Marmaduke—confirmed me In the
belief that General was near in person, with a large portion of his division. After a lively
skirmish of nearly two hours . . . our advanced skirmishers were driven back on their infantry
reserves .... The rebel General Cabell's Brigade, sixteen hundred strong, charged with a yell on
our left for the purpose of flanking us and capturing our battery. Their approach from the cover
of the timber was met gallantly by two or three well-directed volleys from the Thirty-sixth Iowa
Colonel Kittredge's report of the part taken by his regiment In resisting the charge of the enemy
is herewith forwarded .... Immediately after the charge and repulse of the enemy, the
reinforcements sent for by me arrived, but, before they were put in position, the enemy withdrew
.... In looking upon the results of this engagement. and the great disparity In the number of the
forces engaged, I cannot but regard the encounter as one reflecting the highest credit upon the
coolness and unflinching courage of the men of my command. My special thanks are due to
Colonel C. W. Kittredge and Lieutenant Colonel F. M, Drake"
12 Report of Adjutant General of Iowa, 1866, Vol. 2, page 1255.
It will thus be seen that the Thirty-sixth Iowa rendered the most conspicuous service of any
of the troops engaged in the battle. It was characteristic of the regiment to thus distinguish itself,
and to gloriously maintain the honor of its State, in all its conflicts with the enemy. Special
mention of the following named officers of the regiment is made in the official report of the
regimental commander Captains Porter, Fee and Hale, and Lieutenants Baird, Pearson and
Birnbaum. After the battle of Mark's Mills, the remnant of the regiment—as previously stated—
was encamped at Little Rock, where it remained for the greater part of the time during the
winter, being for a part of the time stationed at Devall's Bluff and Saint Charles. At the latter
place the regiment was reunited in April, by the return of those who had survived the horrors of
imprisonment at Tyler, Texas. They had been released from prison in February, then sent to their
homes in Iowa on furlough, and those who had sufficiently recuperated to enable them to do so
returned to the regiment as stated. Many of them, however, never fully recovered from the
effects of their sufferings in prison, and either died or were finally discharged for disability.
Many of the regiment attempted to escape from the prison at Tyler, but few were successful.
Among those who succeeded in escaping were Lieutenant W. F. Vermilya, (afterward Captain of
Company C,) who reached the Union lines at New Orleans, and Major A. H. Hamilton, Captain
Allen W. Miller of Company C, and Captain John Lambert of Company K. The three latter made
their escape together on July 23, 1864, and reached the Union lines August 24, 1864, at Pine
Tree Bluff, Ark. Captain Miller was sent to his home in Iowa, where he died September 17,
1864. Captain Lambert died on the 6th of January, 1865, from the effects of the exposure and
hardships which he endured while making his escape. Those among the captured who were so
severely wounded that they were not able to endure the journey to Tyler, Texas, were paroled,
and afterward returned to Pine Bluff, and those who became able to travel were subsequently
sent to their homes on furlough. Some of these recovered and returned to the regiment, while
others died or were discharged on account of permanent disability. Lieutenant Colonel Drake
was among the severely wounded who were paroled. He
returned to his home in Iowa, from
9
whence he sent the following letter with his official reports—heretofore either referred to or
quoted—to the Adjutant General:
CENTERVILLE, IOWA, July 5, 1864.
GENERAL N. B. BAKER, Adjutant General of Iowa:
DEAR SIR: Enclosed I send you copies of my official reports of the battles of Elkin's Ford, Ark,
April 4, 1864, and of Mark's Mills, Ark., April 26, 1864. At the date of my report of the battle of
Mark's Mills I was a prisoner in the hands of the enemy, and supposed to be mortally wounded. I
was suffering very much from my wounds when I dictated the report, and omitted detailed
particulars, which, under more favorable circumstances, I should have given. The Portion of my
forces engaged with the enemy numbered about one thousand. The rebel forces, commanded by
Major General Fagan, consisted of seven brigades, commanded by Brigadier Generals Shelby,
Dockery, Cabell, Cooper and Crawford, and Colonels Greene and Wright. and numbered, as I
have learned correctly since the date or my report, eight thousand strong. The battle lasted about
five hours. We had been fighting about two and a half hours when I was wounded; up to that
time we had succeeded In repulsing every charge of the enemy, and, except from the great
disparity in numbers, the prospect of victory was in our favor. I am clearly of opinion that, had
my order, given after I was disabled, to turn over the command to the next ranking officer been
promptly executed, a junction might have been formed with the Seventy-seventh Ohio, and our
forces might have been at least withdrawn and retreated to Camden, avoiding the capture of any
except the wounded. I remained in the hands of the enemy eight days, under treatment of Dr. C.
G Strong, Assistant Surgeon Thirty-sixth Iowa, and myself and all the wounded were well
attended and well cared for. With the exception of a few able to travel on foot with the prisoners
taken south, the wounded were paroled, and afterwards, under flag of truce, brought to Pine
Bluff by our forces. The Thirty-sixth Iowa went into action with less than one hundred men, and
You will find, by reference to their list of killed and wounded, which I have ordered to be
forwarded to you, that more than one-fourth of their number were killed or wounded. I arrived
home on the 28th of May, and am rapidly recovering from my wound, and hope to be able to join
my command soon. I am,
Very respectfully, your obedient servant,
F. M. DRAKE, Lieutenant Colonel,
Thirty-sixth Iowa Infantry
The regiment moved to Devall's Bluff, Ark., on June 9, 1865, where it remained until August
24, 1865, upon which date it was mustered out of the service of the United States. It was then
conveyed by steamer to Davenport, Iowa where it arrived September 2, 1865, and was
disbanded. The survivors of the regiment then returned to their respective homes, there to resume
and discharge their duty as citizens, with the same fidelity they had exhibited while serving their
country in the field.
The record of the Thirty-sixth Regiment of Iowa Volunteer Infantry compares favorably with
that of other Iowa regiments which were given a more extended field of service, and were
engaged in many of the greatest battles of the war. Within the comparatively limited field of
operations to which it was assigned, it performed duties that involved the endurance of great
hardships, and, in its conflicts with the enemy, its
officers and enlisted men exhibited the highest
10
degree of courage and fortitude. Its achievements entitle it to an honor place in the military
history of the State of Iowa. The memory of its brave deeds and heroic achievements will be
cherished by all the patriotic sons or daughters of the Commonwealth, which has made such wise
and generous provision not only for the preservation of its history as an organization, but of the
personal record of each of its members. Such a record should serve as an inspiration to the
patriotism of the men of future generations who may be called up to make similar sacrifices in
the service of their country.
13 Report of Adjutant General of Iowa, 1866, Vol. 2, page 1261 The brevet rank of Brigadier
General of United States Volunteers was conferred upon Lieutenant Colonel Drake Feb. 22,
1865, in recognition of his ability and the gallantry of his conduct in battle. He had fully
demonstrated his capacity to successfully command a brigade and the honor conferred upon him
was, therefore, well deserved. After the close of the war he was for many years successfully
engaged in large business enterprise and again demonstrated his ability as one of the leaders in
the development of the State. He was the founder of the great University at Des Moines which
bears his name. He was elected Governor of Iowa, November 5, 1895 which office he held
during the years 1896 and 1898, and declined a renomination for that high office on account of
his failing health.
