Volunteer's Transcription Procedures

These are the basic procedures for the IAGenWeb State Census Project -- For additional info, please read the Volunteer's Manual

  1. Volunteer for this important project by filling out the form at the bottom of this page.
  2. Select the Census Record you want to Transcribe. To do this, simply review the appropriate county page to see if the one you're interested in has already been assigned. You can also have a look at the Status Board, or Census Priorities.
  3. Review the FAQ-HELP page, for a list of Frequently Asked Questions and, perhaps, some online help (more FAQ here: Manual).
  4. Mutually agree on the assignment and transcription method to be used.
  5. Receive verification of your assignment.
  6. Obtain the Photocopies, Microfilm, digital images or other copy of the appropriate Census Record. The transcriber must provide all their own materials and pay all expenses. More here: Volunteer Manual & Where Can I find...
  7. Begin Transcription of the Census Record.
  8. Send a sample of your work to the coordinator to make sure you are on the right course.
  9. Notify the Coordinator when you have completed a township.

If you have any questions, at any time, please contact the Project Coordinator:

Volunteers Needed!!

Do you have access to Iowa State Census records (1836-1925) (see Where To Find)?

Would you be willing to transcribe these records so they will be available online? Even if it is only a township, your assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Please fill out the form below.  I'll add your name, county and year to the list of volunteers.
