BACHMAN John Peter Bachman (1824-1894) son of Joachim Bachman, was born in Germany. He married Rose Ann Hamer's (1834-1906) and they settled at Davenport, Iowa, after sailing from Germany. They were the parents of eight children, four of whom died while they were living at Davenport,, Iowa. The Bachman's came to Carroll County about 1884 and farmed one mile east and one-fourth mile north of Breda. The four children were: Anton, Mary Thelca (Mrs. Joe Ludwig), Anna Gertrude (Mrs. Anthon Thelen) and Olivia Helen.
John and Rose Ann (Hammers) Bachman It is possible that the above information contains errors: This Bachman family probably arrived in Carroll County by 1875. The 1875 State of Iowa Census for Carroll County includes a Peter Bachman, enumerated immediately after Herman “Hammer”. Also, the 1880 US Census in Carroll County, includes Peter and Gesina (Rose Ann also went by the name of Gesina) Bachman, enumerated immediately following the Herman Hamers family. In 1880, Peter and Gesina’s family included five children, the youngest just 3 yrs of age; thus she was probably born in Carroll County. In addition to the four children named above, the 1880 census includes 6 year old Peter Bachman in this family. [1880 U.S. Census from L.D.S. film #1254330, Carroll County, Kniest Township, page 22] [The 1875 Iowa State Census for Kniest Township, Carroll County was bound as a book in the Carroll County Court House, 2nd floor vital statistics room in 1995. I believe that it may currently be found on the 1st floor of the Court House where the vital statistics room is now located.] Anita Henning BECKER Otto Becker was born in Germany September 17, 1845. In 1867 he left the land of his birth and came to America, settling in Illinois where he remained two years. he then came to Iowa where he homesteaded on a farm two miles west and one-half mile north of Breda. This farm has remained in the family ever since, and it is now owned by Darwin Becker. In 1877, Otto Becker married Mattie Aden at Carroll, and to their union six children were born. One son died in 1893 at the age of eleven years. The other children were: Mary (Peon), Minnie (O'Toole), Anna (Luckow), Emma (Schlorholtz), and Otto, Jr. Mrs. Becker died in 1895, and Otto E Becker passed away March 16, 1918 at his home in Breda. (Page 151 of The Breda Centennial Book, Older Days Renewed 1877-1977) The Darwin Becker Farm
During the year 1877, Otto Becker was united in marriage to Mattie Aden. They were parents of six children. One son died in 1893 at the age of eleven years. The other children were: Mary Poen, Minnie O'Toole, Anna Luckow, Emma Schlorholtz, and Otto Becker, Jr. Mrs. Becker died in 1895. Otto Becker retired from farming in 1900 and purchased property in Breda where he made his home until his death in 1918. In 1877, when the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad was built in Breda, Otto Becker shipped the first carload of grain, namely barley, out of Breda. He was compelled to to shovel the entire load. Later Otto Beker, Jr., took over the home place. He was married to Minnie Huisenga, and they were the parents of two sons. Donald, who is married to Geneva Herrig, lives in Wall Lake. Darwin, who is married to Darlene Kies, lives on the home place now. They are the parents of four children: Larry, David, Joni, and Jason.

BOHNENKAMP William T Bohnenkamp, who served two terms as superintendent of schools of Carroll County, a position which he had filled to the general satisfaction of parents and pupils, was a native of this county, born March 5, 1879. His father, John H. Bohnenkamp, was born in Dubuque County, Iowa, and came to Carroll, Carroll County, and engaged in buying and selling stock with his brother, William Bohnenkamp, for a year. He then moved to Breda and entered business on his own account, being now proprietor of a meat market. The mother, Caroline Adeline (Bruning) Bohnenkamp, was born in Grant County, Wisconsin, a daughter of Clemence and Mary Ann (Arts) Bruning. Mr Bruning arrived with his family at Carroll, Iowa, early in the ‘70s and took up his residence at Arcadia, later locating on a farm one mile south of Breda. Mr. Bohnenkamp became a student of the Breda High School from which he was graduated in 1896. He taught school for five years in District No. 3 of Kniest Township and then became connected with his brother, Clemence A. Bohnenkamp, with The Breda Watchman. In the spring of 1903 he retired from the newspaper business and again resumed teaching. Bernard and Anna (Soat) Bruning From: St. Bernard Parish 1880-1980 BRUNING Clemens Bruning was one of the leading business men of Breda, Carroll County, with whose interests he had been identified since the spring of 1879, the town of Breda being at that date but a small hamlet. On settling here in 1879 he engaged in the mercantile business, which continued under the firm name of Bruning & Son, and from the first had been one of the prominent citizens. In the fall of 1879 he bought the lumber interests of Mr. Simpson, and continued dealing in lumber. To this business he added the sale of agricultural implements. Mr. Clemens Bruning was born in Germany in 1830, and at the age of eighteen, in 1848, he emigrated with his father’s family to America, locating in Grant County, Wisconsin. Clemens Bruning subsequently left Grant County for Illinois, and for some time was engaged in mining in the vicinity of Galena, until coming to Carroll County, Iowa. Clemens Bruning married Mary Ann Arts and their children included: Caroline (Mrs. John Bohnenkamp), Mary A. (Mrs. Gnam) William B., August, Frank, Anton, George, Anna and Lena.
