My dad has a certified copy of the death certificate from the State of Iowa,
and I believe it listed cancer as the primary cause of death. I have not
explored the prospects of researching state or public hospital records, or
anything like that yet. What I am really, really interested in are any
photos that anyone might have of Napoleon. Also, any information on his
parents. He was of mixed race background as far as we can tell, as indicated
in census records in the late 1800's and early 1900's. His wife Elizabeth
(my great-grandmother) was white. Yet all three of the children, Mary
Augusta, Alvin (my grandfather), and James, were listed as black along with
Napoloen, in the 1900 census. Mary Augusta provided the information on the
death certificate in 1920, and listed a "J.B. Nailen" as Napoleon's father,
and a "Mary Clark" as his mother. However, we have also come across other
information with another woman's name that could be his mother. I suspect
that a lot of this mystery is wrapped up in pre-Civil War conditions
regarding relationships between blacks and whites, especially in Missouri,
