Maureen “Mags” McConnell Yahr, age 64, of Decorah, Iowa, died Wednesday, November 15, 2023, due to surgical complications to treat metastatic breast and bone cancer, surrounded by her family at Gundersen Health Systems in La Crosse, Wisconsin.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m on Saturday, November 25, 2023, at St. Benedict Catholic Church 307 West Main Street, Decorah, IA with Rev. Donald Hertges presiding.

Visiation will be Friday, November 24, 2023, from 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the Helms Funeral Home, 306 East Water St., Decorah, IA, and also after 9:30 a.m., at the church Saturday morning.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to: Winneshiek Celebration of Life (PO Box 314, Decorah, IA), St. Bridget’s Cemetery, or to the family for a future scholarship, “Maureen (McConnell) Yahr and the class of 1978 memorial scholarship”.

Maureen Margaret McConnell was born November 7, 1959, in Decorah, Iowa, to Melvin Patrick McConnell and Irene Kathern (Snitker) McConnell as the youngest of six children. She graduated from Decorah High School in 1978. Maureen then received her degree in Business with a minor in Accounting from the University of Northern Iowa in 1982. She was united in marriage with Ervin Yahr Jr on November 24, 1990, at St. Benedict Catholic Church in Decorah, Iowa. They had two children who they loved unconditionally. Maureen was a staple in the Decorah community. She worked at the Decorah Chamber of Commerce, Community First Bank, and spent 19 years as the Compliance Officer for Decorah Bank & Trust with her “bank family.” Maureen instilled the importance of community and non-profit work in her children. She served as the president of Nordic Fest twice, the president of Winneshiek County United Way twice, and served on the board for Winneshiek County Celebration of Life. Maureen was an active member of St. Benedict Catholic Church and enjoyed singing in the choir. Maureen could be found on many outings with her tight group of friends, and/or talking about her children. Family was of utmost importance to Maureen. She spent a lot of time supporting her many nieces, nephews, and their children as “Aunt Maggie,” and was the most incredible grandmother.

Maureen is survived by her husband Ervin Yahr Jr, Decorah, Iowa, two children, Kaitlin (Joel) Pohland, Pierz, Minnesota, and Ervin “Will” Yahr III, South Royalton, Vermont, and one granddaughter, Beth Irene Pohland; sisters Mary (Dennis) Cook, Kearney, Missouri, Jane (Ray) Murray, Ames, Iowa, and brother David (Brenda) McConnell, Decorah, Iowa as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents Melvin and Irene, brother Thomas McConnell, sister Kathleen McConnell Simon, mother-in-law Ina Yahr, father-in-law Ervin Yahr Sr, and brother-in-law James Yahr.
