Bill Spilde was born on November 17, 1938, in Decorah, the son of Leonard and Florence (Engen) Spilde. Bill attended country schools and graduated from Decorah High School in 1957. Bill met Nancy Brynsaas in grade school and went on to marry Nancy on August 24, 1958, at Canoe Ridge Lutheran Church in rural Decorah. Together they raised three sons and two daughters.

Bill started working at age 12 on family farms and then in high school, he worked for Monson’s Service Station and then for his uncle Gavin at Spilde Body Shop. When starting his married life, he became a dairyman at Winneshiek County Farm for 6 years and then moved to Decorah to work as the produce manager at K&S and later Jack & Jill grocery. Bill purchased BrightSpot CarWash in 1981 and built a second carwash in 1985. In 2001 Bill retired from the carwash business and went to work at Uusgaard and Smith and NAPA. As a member of Decorah Lutheran Church, he enjoyed volunteering as an usher, money counter, and plowing snow for the church.

Bill was a hard worker, but more importantly, a family man. In his free time, he enjoyed spending time with his wife, children, grandkids, and great grandkids. He was blessed with many nieces and nephews that he loved to keep up with as well. Bill also loved square dancing and polka dancing.
