Fayette Co. Suicide.
West Union Gazette:—Jacob Kohler was one of the prosperous farmers of Pleasant Valley, his home three miles south of Elgin. Friday evening last, at about 7 o'clock, without the slightest indication to his family of his purpose, he deliberately entered a tool shed a few rods from the house, placed the muzzle of a rifle in his mouth and with his foot raised the hammer, firing the shot that killed him instantly. About three years ago Mr. Kohler suffered a stroke of apoplexy, be{g}inning with a vio¬lent bleeding at the nose. He partially recovered, but ever since realized that he was not the same, frequently re¬marking that his head was not right. Friday morning last there was a recur¬rence of the nose-bleeding, and it is not unlikely that he anticipated another stroke, and, rather than risk it, in his disordered mind conceived the idea of “shuffling off this mortal coil."

Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows he was born March 15, 1841 and died June 30, 1899. He is buried in the Elgin City Cemetery.
