Interment was in St. Wenceslaus Catholic Cemetery in Spillville. Pallbearers were: Jeff Busta, Bill Busta, Norbert Busta, Jamie Busta, Mike Klimesh, Marvin Busta, Mark Klimesh, and Chuckie Klimesh. Joseph, 92, died Friday, November 1, 2002 at the Barthell Eastern Star Nursing Home in Decorah of complications from a heart condition.
Joseph Frank Pavlovec was born March 19, 1910 on the Snyder-Lebl family farm west of Spillville, the son of Vaclav and Mary (Snyder) Pavlovec. He attended country school and St. Wenceslaus Catholic School. He had to take over farming before finishing eighth grade when his father was killed in an accident. He also began at 16 helping Charlie Klimesh at his Ford garage. At 19 he wrote to Iowa State College to learn about alfalfa and using crushed limestone as fertilizer. He opened his first quarry at the home farm, hauling rock in a wheelbarrow to a ‘crusher’.
On November 4, 1938 he married Idella Swehla. They lived on the home farm until March 1942 when the family moved to Calmar because of the growing business, J.F. Pavlovec Rock Company, which produced agricultural limestone and crushed rock for roads.
He learned to play the concertina. Collecting antique farm items, cars, trucks, and machines was another hobby. He donated a “Yellow Baby” steam engine to the Mabel-Hesper Museum.
He was a member and officer of Iowa Limestone Producers Association. He was a member of Catholic Workmen and a charter member of Calmar Lions Club and South Winneshiek Country Club.
He is survived by his wife Idella; two daughters: Becky Fenger of Phoenix, AZ and Janelle of Calmar; and one grandson.
Joseph was preceded in death by his parents; and three sisters: Anna Klimesh, Viola Busta, and Margie Pavlovec.
