Mrs. Jacob Snyder

Funeral services for Mrs. Jacob Snyder, age 71, were held here Friday morning at 10 o’clock at the St. Wenceslaus catholic church with interment in the adjoining cemetery. Rev. V. J. Hlubek officiated. Magdalene Leebl was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leebl, and was born on May 16, 1868 on a farm near here. She was married on October 1, 1889 to Jacob Snyder at Spillville. Six children were born to this union. Mrs. Emma Humpal of Clear Lake, Wis., Mrs. Vincent Phillips, Mrs. Joseph Seifert and Joseph Snyder, all of near Spillville, and Tony Snyder and Mrs. James Phillips of Ridgeway. Besides this family she is also survived by her sorrowing husband, one sister, Mrs. Anna Snyder of near Spillville and twenty grandchildren. One sister and one brother preceded her in death. The deceased had been confined to her bed the past five weeks following an accident in which she was severely burned on one of her limbs. Her condition prior to her death had been serious but her family and friends had hoped for her recovery. At times she showed signs of improvement but finally lapsed into a coma and passed peacefully away on Tuesday evening, October 31, 1939 with members of her family at her bedside and fortified by the last rites of the catholic church. Though we may at times seem to turn the tide and prolong life for a while, truly death deals with a mighty invincible hand and generations slowly but surely sink into the grave. Mrs. Snyder spent almost her entire life in the vicinity of Spillville. The past several years prior to her death she lived on a farm near Ridgeway. She was a devoted wife and mother and will be sadly missed by her husband to whom she was a faithful companion for fifty years. Those who bore her to her final resting place were six grandsons, Arthur Phillips, George and Louis Seifert of Spillville, and Joseph, Alois and William Humpal of Clear Lake, Wis. Twined about the hands of the deceased as she lay in her casket was a rosary. This was a highly cherished gift brought from France and presented to her twenty years ago by her son Joseph upon his return home from service in the World war. Those from a distance who came to attend the funeral were Mrs. James Cross and Mrs. Emma Humpal and sons all of Clear Lake, Wis.
