Mrs. John Sbiral

Funeral services for Mrs. John Sbiral, who died at her home in Spillville, Friday morning, Feb. 9, 1940, following an illness of about a month, were held on Monday morning at 10 o’clock at the St. Wenceslaus church, Spillville. Rev. V. J. Hlubek officiated at the final rites where a large number of relatives and friends assembled to pay homage to the deceased, who was a friend to all who knew her. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.

The deceased was tenderly cared for and comforted by members of her family during her illness and was fortified by the last rites of the Catholic church.

As Mary Chechacek she was born in Milwaukee, Sept. 16, 1859, and came to this community at an early age. She was united in marriage to John Sbiral by the Rev. Mikota at Spillville, Jan. 10, 1878, at the St. Wenceslaus church. They spent most of their married life on a farm southwest of here until 1926 when they retired and moved to Spillville where for 14 years they made their home. It was here they had the pleasure of celebrating both their golden and 60th wedding anniversaries.

To this union were born three sons, and three daughters, Mrs. Fred (Emma) Herold, Mrs. John (Lou) Still, Mrs. Eugene (Della) Huber, of near Fort Atkinson, and Edward and Stephen Sbiral, both of near Spillville. A son Joseph preceded his mother into eternity at the age of 16 years in 1899. Besides her aged husband and children, she is survived by nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

The deceased who was always of a cheerful disposition, was a kind friend and neighbor and will be sadly missed by everyone. In the home there is a void which never can be filled, where the sorrowing husband and children will never again find that love and friendship like “Mother’s” unbroken till death called her and life’s work was done.

Those who bore her to her final resting place were five grandsons, Kenneth Huber, Richard Herold, Alden, Lewis and Alvin Sbiral and Stanley Jirak.
