Mrs. Louis Benda

Mrs. Louis Benda, 59, passed away at the University hospital at Iowa City Monday evening, Dec. 18, following an operation for goitre{sp}. The report of her death Tuesday morning shocked the Spillville community as very few were aware of her serious condition.

Mary Mikesh was born Jan. 22, 1880 near Spillville, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Mikesh with whom she lived until her marriage on Nov. 22, 1904 to Louis Benda. The couple made their home in Spillville. With the exception of a few years when they lived at Cedar Rapids, Mrs. Benda lived in Spillville her entire life.

The deceased was a lifelong Catholic whose greatest interests were her religion and her home. As a Christian mother and wife, she will be sadly missed in the home and equally missed by her countless friends who no longer will hear her cheerful voice, nor clasp her glad hand which death Monday had forever stilled. May she receive the reward of a life well spent.

The survivors include her husband, one daughter, Mrs. Mary Herold, three sons, George Valerian and Louis. A twin son of the latter (Edward) died in infancy. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Dolores and Lawrence Herold and Geraldine and Gaylan Benda, and brother Louis Mikesh and a sister, Mrs. Wm. Mikota, all of this vicinity. Two brothers, John and Albert of Protivin preceded her in death.

Funeral services were held last Thursday morning at 10 o’clock at St. Wenceslaus church where a mass of requiem was offered by the Rev. V. J. Hlubek, Rev. J. P. Broz delivered a very impressive sermon and officiated at the burial services. The pallbearers were: Mike Herold, James Stepan, John Falada, James Kubik, Dan Novak and James Triska. Many from Calmar, Fort Atkinson, Protivin and Cresco attended the funeral where a large number of relatives and friends gathered to pay their final respects to the deceased.
