Gertrude Herold services held

Funeral services for Gertrude Herold of Spillville were held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 17 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville with Rev. Donald Hawes officiating. Interment was in St. Wenceslaus Catholic Cemetery in Spillville. Pallbearers were her grandchildren. Balik Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Gertrude, 94, died Wednesday, May 14, 2003 at the Winneshiek Co. Memorial Hospital in Decorah after a long illness.

Gertrude Dorothy Herold was born November 2, 1908 near Fort Atkinson, the daughter of Joseph and Tracy (Secora) Houdek. She attended St. Johns Catholic School in Fort Atkinson.

On October 4, 1927 she married Frank Herold at St. Johns Catholic Church in Fort Atkinson. They farmed west and northwest of Spillville for many years. She retired in 1978 and moved to Spillville. In 1999, Gertrude moved to the Aase Haugen Nursing Home.

She was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church. She enjoyed fishing, playing cards, gardening, making rugs and jewelry trees.

She is survived by one son: Floyd of Decorah; one daughter: Florine Elsbernd of Spillville; 12 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren.

Gertrude was preceded in death by her husband Frank in 1973; two grandchildren; her parents; and two brothers: Frank and Carl.
