Services held for Frederick Carolan

Funeral services for Frederick Carolan, 83, of Ridgeway, were held Saturday, May 16 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville with interment in St. Wenceslaus Cemetery. The Rev. Donald Hawes officiated. French & Balik Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Fred died May 10, 1998 at the Cresco Care Center following a long illness. Fred donated his body to medical science.

He was born October 12, 1914 in Winneshiek County, the son of Philip Sr. and Elizabeth (Whalen) Carolan. He attended grade school near the family farm and also at St. Benedict’s in Decorah. After graduation from Decorah High School, he attended Loras College in Dubuque for one year, he then worked for a car dealer in Decorah before he was drafted into the Army prior to Pearl Harbor. He was stationed at Ft. Sill, OK; Camp Roberts, CA; Ft. Lewis, WA; then overseas to Europe, he was involved in the Normandy Invasion which included the Battle of the Bulge.

Fred was awarded four Bronze Battle Stars, the Bronze Star and a Cluster, and also the Purple Heart. He was discharged as a Master Sergeant in October of 1945. On August 27, 1997 also with other veterans of Winneshiek County, he was given the “Jubilee of Liberty” medal from the French Consulate, for taking part in the Normandy Invasion.

On April 22, 1947 Fred married Helen Soukup at St Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville by Rev. John Chihak, after which they established their home in Ridgeway.

Fred was employed by the US Post Office in Ridgeway from 1945-1955. He retired from the Ridgeway branch of Farm Service out of Decorah. He also served on the Ridgeway Volunteer Fire Department for 35 years.

Survivors include his wife, Helen of Ridgeway; six sons: Walter of Loveland; Roger of Albany, WI; Kenneth of Ridgeway; Clifford of Decorah; Randell of Tucson, AZ; and Mark of Ridgeway; seven grandsons; and four granddaughters.

Fred was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Stanley in the Air Force in 1981; five brothers: Thomas, John, Philip Jr. (Flip), Clement, and Leonard; one sister, Marie as a child and a half-brother, Joseph.
