Mary M. Soukup, age 82, of Decorah, IA, died on Sunday, May 1, 2011, at the Barthell Eastern Star Home in Decorah, IA.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, May 6, 2011, at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church, with Rev. Phillip Gibbs presiding. Burial will be in St. Wenceslaus Catholic Cemetery, Spillville, IA.

Friends may call from: 3:00-7:00 p.m., on Thursday and on Friday morning from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m., at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah.

There will be a rosary at 4:00 p.m., on Thursday at the funeral home.

Mary Martha (Andera) Soukup was born on August 6, 1928, on a farm between Spillville and Protivin, the daughter of Albert and Frances (Humpal) Andera. She was the tenth of thirteen children, and attended Spillville schools as a child. On April 21, 1948, she married James C. Soukup at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville, and they made their home on a farm northwest of Spillville in Sumner Township. In addition to raising four children, Mary was a full partner in the farm’s operation, which included dairy and beef cattle, hogs, and laying hens over the years. Mary and James retired from farming in 1989 and shortly thereafter moved to a home they built in Decorah. While in Decorah, Mary volunteered at the Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital and at the Barthell Eastern Star Home.

Mary was a parishioner at St. Wenceslaus in Spillville and later at St. Benedict’s in Decorah, participating with the ladies guild at both parishes. She enjoyed reading, puzzles, playing cards, and spending time with family and friends. She also enjoyed traveling with James and friends while on bus tours in the Unites States, and was able to see the land of her ancestors on a trip to Czechoslovakia.

Survivors include her husband of over 63 years, James, Decorah, IA; four children: Diane (Peter) Kriener, Ft. Atkinson, IA; Karen (Darrel) North, Krum, TX; John (Lesley) Soukup, North Liberty, IA; and Todd (Jan) Soukup, Waukon, IA; ten grandchildren: Deb (Kerri) Langreck, St. Lucas, IA; Arlen (Annette) Kriener, Ft. Atkinson, IA; Peter (Kaiya) Kriener, Ft. Atkinson, IA; Jeremy (Samantha) Kriener, St. Lucas, IA; Denise Kriener, Ryan, IA; Sara Kriener, Cedar Falls, IA; Lisa (Steve) Nelson, West Branch, IA; Jesse Soukup, Iowa City, IA; Daren (Amber) North, The Colony, TX; and Shonda (Scott) North - Walthall, Krum, TX; three brothers: Matt (Darlene) Andera, Calmar, IA; Willie (Mary Anne) Andera, Lawler, IA; and Larry Andera, Decorah, IA; twelve great-grandsons: Kyle and Kalvin Langreck, Bradley, Marcus, Mitchell, Jordan, Caleb, and Karter Kriener; Ian and Cael Nelson; and Jackson and Shane Walthall-North; one brother-in-law, Marvin (Marcella) Soukup, Sr., Calmar, IA; three sisters-in-law: Doris Andera, Ft. Atkinson, IA; Grace Andera and Janet Andera, both of Cresco, IA.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents: Albert and Frances (Humpal) Andera; one granddaughter, Annette Kriener; three sisters: Adella (Carl) Peterson; Frances (Leonard) Hageman; and Marcella (Ed) Hayek; six brothers: Edward (Helen) Andera; Louis Andera; Albert Andera; Robert Andera; Frank (Georgina) Andera; and Cyril Andera (in infancy).

Mary’s family would like to express their deep appreciation to the staff of the Barthell Eastern Star Home and Hospice of Winneshiek County for their care and attention during her illness. Special thanks are also extended to the many people who so generously brought gifts of friendship and food in her final months. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Hospice of Winneshiek County or St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Mary’s name.
