Joseph Anthony Ryant, age 84, of Spillville, died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2011, at the Cresco Care center, in Cresco.

Joseph “Joe” Anthony Ryant, was born March 1, 1926, the son of Frank and Mary (Pizinger) Ryant, on a farm near Fort Atkinson, Iowa. At one year of age, the family moved northwest of Spillville. He attended rural country school for two years and then St. Wenceslaus Catholic School thru the eighth grade. He farmed with his father for several years. After the early death of his father, he and his mother farmed together.

He married Romana Zeien, Oct. 17, 1950, at North Washington. Together they farmed for 37 years and moved into Spillville in 1988, where they still reside. Joe served on the Winneshiek County Extension Council for two terms. He was the first farmer in the area to own a round baler and was the first to introduce Charolais cattle to the area. Joe was a member of Branch No. 33 of the Catholic Workman and served as president for six years. He also sold insurance for them for many years. He and Romana were sales representatives for Furst McNess for 20 years.

Joe’s survivors include his wife of 60 years; Romana Ryant of Spillville; three daughters: Pat Pinter, of Cresco, Judy (Richard) Jessen of Ankeny, and Karen (Michal) Hutzel of Mason City; three sons: Francis (Donna) Ryant of Cresco, James (Denise) of Spillville, and Gary (Jane) Ryant of Ridgeway; 16 grandchildren: Jeff Hulsebus, Dawn (Othello) Rollon, Dana (Joe) Karasek, Chad (Kristin) Pinter, Shane (Elisa) Pinter, Sara (Noah) Parr, Anne (Carl) Piper, Chris (Bonnie) Jessen, Michelle, Mark and Monica Ryant, Ashten and Zachariah Frana, Chezny Ryant, Jacob and Jennifer Hutzel; 15 great-grandchildren: Amber Burkhart, Clay and Zoe Rollon, Kennedy and Kali Karasek, Alex, Brianna, and Ciara Pinter, Michaela, Josephine and Kathryn Pinter, Konner and Caleb Parr, Grace and Grant Jessen; two brothers-in-law: Louis (Lucille) Zeien and Francis (Rita) Zeien, both of New Hampton, and Vincent (Toddy) Zeien of Ionia; one sister-in-law: Agnes Brincks, New Hampton.

Joe was preceded in death by his son: John on April 18, 1982; his parents: Frank Ryant in 1945 and Mary Ryant in 1978; three brothers: Alois Ryant in 1977, Ernest Ryant in 1998 and Edward Ryant in 1993; one son-in-law: Joe Pinter 2007; and three brothers-in-law: Alvin Zeien, Elmer Zeien and Guido Brincks.

Mass of Christian Burial was Saturday, Jan. 29, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville, with the Rev. Donald Hawes officiating. Lector was Denise Ryant., Doris Thompson was organist. Dan Silhacek was cantor. St. Wenceslaus Choir also sang. Hymns were: “Here I Am Lord,” “Amazing Grace,” “On Eagle’s Wings,” “Goin Home” and “How Great Thou Art.”

Eucharistic ministers were Phyllis Mashek, Chad Kuboushek, Joe Hauber and Dwayne Hauber. Offertory gift bearers were Joe’s grandchildren. Casket bearers were Joe’s grandchildren. Interment was at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Cemetery in Spillville. Balik Funeral Home in Spillville assisted the family with arrangements.
