Lucille Borghild (Aschim) Sacquitne was born Feb. 15, 1923 in Glenwood Township Decorah, the daughter of Hans and Marie (Nelson) Aschim. She was baptized and confirmed at Washington Prairie Lutheran Church in rural Decorah, graduated from Decorah High School in 1941, and held degrees from Luther College in Decorah and Drake University in Des Moines.
Lucy was united in marriage to Lyle Sacquitne June 2, 1951 at Washington Prairie Lutheran Church. Lucy and Lyle were blessed with three children: Susan, James and John.
Lucy’s life journey was full and rich. She touched the lives of many people. Lucy was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and a gifted teacher. Before her marriage to Lyle, she taught at various country schools in the Decorah area, including Locust, and the Aschim and Bakke Schools. After she and Lyle married, she taught in Fort Des Moines, and Minneapolis. In 1952 Lucy and Lyle moved to Decorah, and she took time off from teaching to raise their children. In 1962 Lucy returned to teaching at North Winneshiek, and then in the Decorah Public Schools as a special education teacher for many years. She retired in 1990 at age 67. During retirement, Lucy and Lyle enjoyed many winters in Texas.
Lucy loved God, loved people, loved everything life had to offer, had abundant energy, was a hard worker, always saw the “best” in everyone, had a gentle, positive and caring spirit and gave of herself unconditionally. She was passionate about those she loved … her husband, children, grandchildren, parents, brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, her students and her many dear friends. She was invested in her community and church life. Lucy was an active member at First Lutheran Church, Good Shepherd Lutheran, Oneota Golf and Country Club, Monday Club and her aerobics group. She volunteered at the hospital, Vesterheim Museum and many Nordic Fests. Lucy was also involved in WELCA and taught Sunday school and Bible school. Her greatest joy was in spending time with her children and grandchildren, and she loved entertaining, golfing, playing bridge, hiking, biking, sitting in the sun, gardening, reading, baking, bible study, shopping and most of all, participating in her children’s activities … whether it was cheering at a football game or at a concert.
Lucy became a resident of the Barthell Eastern Star Nursing Home from 2003-2010. Following a long illness, she died surrounded by her family.
Lucy is survived by her husband Lyle, of Decorah; daughter Susan Druck of Eden Prairie, Minn., son James and wife Pam (Billiet) Sacquitne of Appleton, Wis. and son John and wife Ruth Ann (Lidtke) Sacquitne of Decorah; grandchildren: Elizabeth Druck, Benjamin Sacquitne and wife Lisa (Smestad), Nick Sacquitne and wife Caylee (Walters), Samuel Sacquitne and Sonya Sacquitne; step grandchildren: Matthew Druck and Sarah Druck; great-grandchild, Nolan Sacquitne; brother, Karl (Sylvia) Aschim of Decorah; sister, Agnes Winger of Decorah; and sister-in-law, Ann Aschim of Decorah.
