The following is the text of the obituary of George W. Ferguson from the "Ottumwa Courier" dated June 5, 1937, page 1.

[Headline] Pioneer Ottumwa Builder is Dead
[Sub-Head] George W. Ferguson, 81, Had Part In Many Local Projects; Was City Inspector.

"George W. Ferguson, 81, Pioneer Ottumwa carpenter and builder died at his home, 809 Jay street at 2 a.m. today. He had been ill for the last seven weeks.

A charter member of the caprenters' union, local No. 767, Mr. Ferguson had been connected with the construction of the Wapello county courthouse, the Elks building, the Ballingall hotel and the building housing Hall's candy factory.

Mr. Ferguson was born in Hannibal, Mo., March 1, 1856, the son of Robert and Susie Ferguson. He came o Ottumwa in 1878 and had lived here since. He was the oldest member of the local carpenter's union.

For two terms prior to sixteen years ago, Mr. Ferguson was building inspector for the city.

Surviving are his wife, Ida B. Ferguson; three daughters, Mrs. Emma Terrell and Mrs. Olive Hobbs of Ottumwa; and Mrs R. M. Schlaff of Galesburg, Ill., and three sons, Jess G., R. J., and Roy Ferguson all of Ottumwa.

Funeral Services will be held in the Lester Jay funeral home Monday at 2 p.m., conducted by the Rev. Robert Swick, paster of the Wesley Methodist Episcopal church. Burial will be made in the Ottumwa cemetery"[end of quoted text]
