JOHN M. SILVER
John Marshall Silver was born November 8, 1849. He was the only son of Jacob and Catherine Silver, who were among the pioneer settlers of Van Buren county. He was born on the old Jacob Silver homestead three miles from Cantril. He passed away at his home in Cantril, June 23, 1924, aged 74 years, 8 months and 15 days. His death was the result of a paralytic stroke which he suffered on April 17, 1919, and from which he never completely recovered.
He was married to Laura Fordyce, daughter of another of the pioneer families of Van Buren county, on October 5, 1871. To this union four children, all boys, were born, all of whom grew to manhood in this locality. They were: Jacob Chester Silver, of Stockport, Seth Stanley Silver, of Cantril, Frank Fordyce Silver, of Wickfield Farms, near Cantril, and the youngest son, Archie Leight Silver, deceased.
Mr. Silver united with the Christian church more than thirty years ago and always remained a faithful member of this church.
John Marshall Silver was a man of great strength of purpose and was ever a kind and affectionate husband and father. Most of his life was spent in the agricultural and livestock industry, in which he was very successful. Later he was one of the organizers of the Cantril Savings Bank, of which institution he was president until the time of his affliction, a little more than five years ago.
He was always foremost in business ventures and a backer of any enterprise and plan that was for the general good of the community or the advancement of prosperity. It is significant of this that he wrote the first check ever written in Van Buren county.
Brother Silver leaves to mourn his death, his companion, Mrs. Laura Silver, of Cantril, three sons, Jacob Chester of Stockport, Seth Stanley Silver and Frank Fordyce Silver of Cantril, and many other relatives and a host of friends.
Thus endeth a sketch of the life of a highly respected native of Van Buren county, a man who left his impress upon the entire community, a useful life that will not soon be forgotten. Mrs. Silver and the family have the sympathy of the entire community in their bereavement.
Funeral services were held at the Cantril Christian church Wednesday, June 25th, at 2 p.m. The funeral sermon was preached by Elder Herbert C. Shaw, pastor of the church, and he was assisted by Rev. Warren, pastor of the Methodist church. Burial at Cantril cemetery.
