Thomas Jefferson Lorton was born near Farmington, Iowa, May 22, 1839, and departed this life at his home in Mt. Sterling Dec. 14, 1919 being at the time of death 80 years 6 months and 22 days of age. He was of a family of 10 children, all of whom had preceded him in death except one sister, Mrs. Mary Armstrong, now living in Farmington.
He was married to Miss Sarah Wolfe Nov. 13, 1861. She passed away April 21, 1864. To this union two children were born, both dying in infancy. He was again married, to Miss Margaret Wolfe, April 13, 1867. To this union were born five children: Mrs. Della Alfrey of Mt. Sterling, Mrs. Iona Park, also of Mt. Sterling; George, Clarence, and Otto Lorton, all living on farms near Mt. Sterling. The deceased lived all of his life in Van Buren county, the most of it being spent on a farm. He moved to Mt. Sterling in the spring of 1906, where he lived until his death. He had been a member of the M. E. church about 30 years, having joined at the Ward school house during a meeting held by Rev. Wilson, and had always lived a true Christian life.
Mr. Lorton was a member of the Masonic order.
The deceased leaves to mourn his death his wife and five children, and ten grandchildren.
