Thomas Jefferson Lorton was born near Farmington, Iowa, May 22, 1839 and died at his home in Mt. Sterling on Dec. 14,1919, being at the time of his death 80 years, 6 months and 22 days of age.

He was of a family of ten children all of whom have preceded him in death except one sister, Mrs. Mary Armstrong, now living in Farmington.

He was united in marriage with Miss Sarah Wolf Nov. 13, 1861. She passed away April 21, 1864. To this union two children were born, both dying in infancy.

He was again married to Miss Margaret Wolf April 13, 1867, and to this union five children were born: Mrs. Della Alfrey and Mrs. Iona Park of Mt. Sterling; George, Clarence, and Otto Lorton, all living on farms near Mt. Sterling.

The deceased lived all of his long and useful life in Van Buren county, most of it being spent on a farm on Vernon Prairie. He moved to Mt. Sterling in the spring of 1905 and remained there until his death.
