Hi Janet:
I am trying to research where the name Thomas came from.
It was from the WPA 1939 Cemetery Records recorded by the Work Progress administration. It lists:
Whitney, Elizabeth (Thomas) b. Oct 15, 1856 to Aug 3, 1885 Pleasant Hill Cem. Ireton Mrs. C. or G. L.
Now, this entry was recorded by a person, so it may contain human error.
There is another Elizabeth recorded in the WPA records also.
Whitney, Elizabeth died April 18, 1894 age 38: buried in Union Hill Cem Washington Twnsp. (Mrs. Joshua). Her maiden was Thayer I believe. It may well be that the person doing the recording just listed her in reference to the name of Thomas found close to her.
After we research this further and have absolute proof she had no connection to the name Thomas, we can have it changed.
I have a copy of the entry from the Ireton Cemetery records directly. This is what it says, and not mention of the name Thomas.
Elizabeth Whitney Ireton IA female born Oct 15, 1856 age 28 years 9 months and 18 days, married, Housekeeper, informant C. L. Whitney date of death Aug 3, 1885 no other info.I will see if I can find an obit in the Hawarden paper. Also more census records.
Things like this happen and thanks for bringing it to our attention.
