In Response To: Charles E Moore (Janice Samuelson)

I looked at the birth records. It appears that Charles was actually born on September 23, 1895 and the actual recording of the birth was recorded in the county register on March 3, 1896. At the top of the page it specifically states that the column is "Date of Filing Return" which is consistent with the others listed on the page. In the late 1890's, it was not uncommon to record a birth with the county officials weeks or even several months after the date of birth.

Your query says between Feb. and Mar. 1895, but it is actually the 1896 page. I hope this helps a little.

Also, it appears that he was married in Chicago in 1917, had a daughter in 1918 and was probably divorced, as he is enumerated in the 1920 census with his parents as a single man.

Here are the details:

Groom: Charles E. Moore, age 22, birth year 1895;
Bride: Helen N. Philipps, age 20, born 1897;
Marriage Date: May 5, 1917
Chicago, Cook, Illinois

Illinois, Cook County Birth Certificates:
Dorothy Alberta Moore, born February 4, 1918 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois;
Father: Charles Edward Moore, age 22, born in Davenport, Iowa;
Mother: Helen Phillips, age 19, born in Chicago, Illinois;

Also, it appears that Charles has died before December 29, 1941 when his father Charles Richard Moore died in Moline, Illinois.

His father's obituary from the Moline Observer

C. R. Moore, 76, Dies in Moline
Native of Moline was formerly employed as Attorney for Chicago Corporation

Charles R. Moore, 76, native of Moline and former corporation lawyer of Chicago, died at 6:15 o'clock this morning [December 29, 1941] in Moline Public hospital after four years' illness. He had been in the hospital only a week. Mr. Moore moved to Moline to reside with his sisters, the Misses Hattie, Mary and Clara Moore, 1115 Fifteenth Street, in 1937 because of illness. From 1917 to 1937 he was employed as corporation lawyer for Assets Realization Company of Chicago.

Mr. Moore was born June 4, 1865, in Moline. He was graduated from Moline public high school, a business college in Davenport and the University of Michigan Law School. He practiced law in Davenport for several years before going to Chicago. He was a brother of William R. Moore, Moline Attorney, who died seven years ago. Mr. Moore married Miss Clara J. Foley in Ann Arbor, Mich. He was a member of Knights of Columbus and Holy Name society of Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Chicago. During the First World War he was a dollar-year-man in government service and traveled with the troops.

Surviving are the widow; a daughter Mrs. Dorothy Caldwell of Oak Park IL; four sisters, Mrs. W.A. Reed of Pasadena CA and the Misses Hattie, Mary and Clara Moore of Moline; and two grandchildren. A son preceded him in death.

If this obituary did not exist stating that his only son was deceased, a burial in the Vacaville-Elmira Cemetery in Vacaville, California would look very interesting. The name of the decedent was Charles E. Moore, born September 23, 1895 in Illinois [per California death index]; social security number taken out in Florida; died in Solano County, California on August 8, 1963; The name and date both match. Burial in the Vacaville-Elmira Cemetery, Vacaville, Solano County, California in the "Old section D22."
