I have talked with my Aunt Ethel, who was born in 1912 and attended Hazel Dell Township #5 school (Center School) in Pottawattamie County. She doesn't remember the Joseph and Ida (Spittler) Ford family. However, she says that Maggie Spittler's younger children attended Center School with her. At that time, Maggie Spittler and her younger children lived on a farm owned by the Greggs a half mile northwest of the school. By 1930, the Vern Springer family appears to be living on the Gregg farm, but Maggie Spittler and her two youngest sons are still living somewhere in Hazel Dell Township. Later they moved north to Boomer Township.

The description you give of the location of your mother's school matches Center School. However, the Spittler children would not have crossed a bridge to get to school as you indicated your mother did. This would indicate that your mother's parents were not living with your great-grandmother Maggie Spittler at that time.

My aunt thinks she vaguely remembers a fire. I have asked her to talk to my other aunts about this to see if they can rekindle some memories.

If indeed your grandparents were living in the Center School district in the mid 1920s as I suspect, and if they hadn't moved away, my mother would have been your mother's school teacher for two years (1929-1930 and 1930-1931).

Sadly Center School is long gone. The landscape is still beautiful, but the area is starting to become rural residential due to its proximity to Omaha.

I will leave another posting here if I get information about where Joseph and Ida (Spittler) Ford lived in Hazel Dell Township. One last thought: Does your mother know the names of any neighbors when she lived in Hazel Dell Township or does she remember her teacher's name?
