Missouri river crossing

I am looking for information about where river crossings would have taken place at the time of 1861. I am not familiar with your county or what towns/cities lie on the banks of the Missouri, but I am trying to locate any and all possible established river crossing (ferry) points at the time of 1861.
My 3rd great grandfather traveled through the county in January of 1861 to retrieve his mother in law from across the river in Nebraska. On their return back across the river something happend and he was drowned on the river.
I am trying to narrow down where this might have happened if and if in fact there were some main crossing points on the river. Hopefully this might lead me to the town or city nearby where this happened where I might look for possible records.

Thanks in advance.
Jeff
