Hi Pat--
I found your Burkes on the 1885 Iowa State Census, the 1900 Federal Census and the 1905 Iowa State Census.
According to the 1885 IA State Census, Patrick W. Burke's family consisted of himself, wife Ellen, and children in birth order:Lizzie (13), Hannah (10), John J. (7), Morgan P. (5), William E. (2). Their address is "Washington & Plymouth" and no occupation is listed for Patrick.
According to the 1900 C. your Patrick W. Burk(e) (no "e" on the census, but not an uncommon variation), was living in LeMars with wife Ellen, sons Morgan (20), William (18), and Frank (8) and daughters Ella (15) and "Allace" (Alice) (12). (The 3 youngest were born after the previous census) Ellen was listed as the mother of 10 children, 8 of whom were living in 1900. Patrick is listed as a shoemaker who rented his home. He arrived in the US in 1882 and was a naturalized citizen.
You are fortunate for this 1900 C. listing! Most often the month and year of birth is all that is listed on the 1900 C. But this enumerator listed the date as well (as best as I can read them):
Patrick - June 6, 1840, Ireland
Ellen - June 15, 1850, PA
Morgan - Aug 15, 1879, WI
William - Feb 10, 1882, WI
Ella - Mar 15, 1885, IA
Allace - Mar 10, 1888, IA
Frank - June 5, 1892According to the 1905 IA State Census, Patrick and family were living in LeMars (the PostOffice Address field is blank for this page and a few previous...the last time a name is listed it is "LeMars", with check marks following. This is an assumption based on that and no other city/town being written in subsequent to the last "LeMars" indication.) The members of the household are Patrick, Ellen, Hannah, Morgan, William, Ella, Alice and Frank. That's all that the 1905 contains.
I hope this has helped in some way. Happy hunting!
