I've done a little more searching in Iowa and Virginia without finding much: no online marriage records, e.g. John N., age 65, and Emily, age 55 are in the 1920 Rivanna, Albemarle, Virginia census. In 1880 Louis and Martha are in Rivanna, Albemarle, Virginia with their family, as you know. I tried going to IAGenWeb Monroe County, but it's down right now. You may find some useful records there.
