The 1885 Iowa state census shows the following.

Mahaska Co., Union...

William Pilgrim, 58, b IN
Lydia, 48, b IN
John, 23, b ??ka (as indexed...all the children have ??ka...the actual image looks like the last part of Mahaska to me; i.e., born in Mahaska Co., IA)
Sarah Catherine, 20
Cory, 16 (female)
Dora, 14
Semantha, 12
Edwin, 10

The age of Dora listed here fits with your initial post.

There also is a separate family, John R Pilgrim, 26, b IN and wife Mary, 26, b IL listed as living at Garfield. This could be an eldest married son of the William and Lydia above.
