Land record for James Ryan

I am searching for the land that was owned by my ancestor, James Ryan, in Lee county, Iowa. According to the 1840 census, he owned land in Township 65 and we believe it was a farm that he owned somewhere between 1836 and 1840. The online website for Land Records starts in 1846 so nothing was found. Any suggestions or help in looking for a land purchase by James Ryan?
