The final report states that assets were ceased by one creditor and sold. There was no other income to cover the remaining debts.

Dr. Gawley was born of Scotch ancestry in County Sligo, Ireland in 1851. He emigrated to Canada when 18 years of age, living about four years with his uncle G. L Irwin, who was a cabinet maker and holds an important position in the passenger car building department of the Northwestern in Chicago. The Dr. took a course in the medical department at Ann Arbor and later spent about six months in hospital work in Detroit, coming to Anamosa in February, 1877. He was married July 16, 1878 to Miss Nellie Fowler, who died a little more than a year later. In the autumn of 1880 he married Miss Mamie Coates, but they were not living together at the time of his death.
The funeral services were held at the Doctor's late residence at 2 pm last Tuesday, conducted by Rev. J. I Corbyn of St. Mark's Episcopal church, in which faith the deceased had been brought up. Rev S P Milikan, of the Congregational church, made some very appropriate remarks, both concerning the dead and the living. The music was by a choir composed of Misses Jennie Niles and Dora Hartman and Messrs. A F Kemp and T E Booth, Mrs. J S Stacy presiding at the organ. Interment was had in the family lot. A large number of the members of White Fawn Lodge A O U W attended in a body. The pallbearers were Drs C W Wilber, J M D Joslin, A G Hejinian, J E King, T C Gorman and W B Skinner and Drs H W and M P Sigworth, W T McKay and L J Adair were honorary pallbearers, the latter being called away before the funeral. The floral decorations were simple consisting of calla lilies and yellow roses.
Mr. G L Irwin of Chicago and Mr. Thomas Gawley, a half brother of the deceased, were the only blood relatives present at the obsequies.
