I have several publications, by Iowa City Genealogical Society, that may confuse you even further.
Johnson County marriages - Edward F. Fries and Ada Luther 14 February 1893. This date is a little different than you have but appears to be the couple you referenced. I don't know if the date is for license application or marriage.
Oxford Cemetery - Frese, Edwin 1877 - 1974; same stone Ada M. 1882 - 1965. It seems more than a coincidence, but this couple would have been VERY young in 1893.
I don't know it this helps.
