Having collected Ely Brothers (no relation) products for the last 25 years, I can give you a little insight.
The Ely brothers had a drug-store in Owego, NY, apparently opening in the 1860's. During this time, they produced and sold Ely's Cream Balm, which I would compare to Vick's VapoRub, both in consistency and smell; they appear to have similar ingredients. They also sold Ely's Cream Balm Liquid (more liquid, slightly larger bottle)and Ely's Nasal Cream Balm (bigger bottle, similar product).
The company was moved to New York City in the early 1890's and appears to have been quite successful as I have newspaper ads for the products from 15 or so states, ranging to the Pacific Northwest and the Southwest.
The company was then sold to Wyeth in the mid 1930's, and they continued to produce the product in both bottle and tube containers; however, I don't know when production ceased as Wyeth has never responded to any questions.
Hope this helps!
