The 1880 Census (below) shows the only candidate I can find for John's family. George Kripner lives in Cedar Rapids in 1900. This fits with George in the 1880 census and would be John's brother. I do not have access to Iowa City papers for some years/months, but I did find a blurb about John's death in a Cedar Rapids paper below.
The 1900, 1910, 1920 Censuses of Minnesota, Steele Co., show the Christian Mathwig family who's wife, Elizabeth, is likely the mother of John Kripner. They have "step-son/dau" Chris and Lizzie KRIPPNER living in the household in 1900 and Eva Kripner in 1910 and 1920. These appear to be part of the 1880 family except for Lizzie who would have been born after 1880.
I find some short articles on Edwards death, from the Iowa City Citizen, that you probably already have. I also find a MILLER connection. Brief news blurbs show Emma, John and Mary's daughter visiting from Chicago. One of her stops was at an uncle Miller's house (see below). I also find a wedding announcement for Magdeline Kripner and Joseph P. Machovec, as well as obits for both Emma Kripner Ries and CC Ries, if you need any of those.
Hope this helps some,
Steve
