In the 1850 Census, My 4th Great Grandmother Margaret Bowls (1795?), found herself a long way from her native North Carolina with 5 children ages 21 to 13 to support and no husband. The children are John (1829), Isabella (1830), Charity (1832), Martha (1834) and Joseph (1837). Margaret was unable to read or write and so the spelling of the last name changes nor was she sure of her exact age or of the children. The children used the spelling Bowles. In 1850, her residence was Walnut, in 1854 Iowa State Census it was Penn. Here is what I do know- all the children were born in NC so the family did not arrive in Iowa until after 1837 at the earliest. I can find no record of the father. Looking for anything. Thank you for your time.
