Charles "Charlie" Ernest BIRD, 71, of Fairfield, died Sunday, Jan. 31, 2016, at Jefferson County Health Center in Fairfield.
The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Behner Funeral Home in Fairfield, with the Rev. Danny Cary officiating. Burial, with military rites, will be at Forest Home in Mt. Pleasant (note: in Henry Co., IA).
Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the family. Cards and memorials can be mailed to Marie RAMBO, 1654 Highway 34, Fairfield 52556. Online condolences can be made at www.behnerfh.com.
Mr. BIRD was born April 6, 1944, in Fairfield, the son of Ronald and Wanda CARY BIRD. Mary CRAVENS was his lifelong partner since July 15, 1971. She died Oct. 20, 2011.
Mr. BIRD worked at Dexter in maintenance for 43 years before he retired.
Mr. BIRD served in the Iowa Army National Guard 224th Engineers Battalion during the Vietnam War (sic - Vietnam Conflict).
He enjoyed bowling, fishing, woodworking and gardening. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He was a caring person and enjoyed helping everyone.
Survivors include: his children, Marie RAMBO and husband David, Emma WELCHER and husband Randy, James CRAVENS, Julie GARRISON, Ronald BIRD, Tammy MARTINEZ, and Charles BIRD Jr.; 13 grandchildren; 20-plus great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Judy WILLIAMS and Joyce FROST.
In addition to his lifelong partner Mary CRAVENS, he was preceded in death by: his parents.
