Jeanette Katherine HOLMES, 88, of Fairfield, died today, Wednesday, Dec. 16, 2015, at SunnyBrook Living Care Center in Fairfield.

Behner Funeral Home in Fairfield is helping the family with arrangements.

Jeanette Katherine HOLMES, 88, of Fairfield, died Wednesday, Dec. 16, 2015, at SunnyBrook Living Care Center in Fairfield.

A funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary Catholic Church in Fairfield, with the Rev. Nick Adam officiating. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery, also in Fairfield.

Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Friday at St. Mary Catholic Church, with a wake service following visitation.

Memorials can be made to St. Mary Catholic Church or Education Foundation of Fairfield Public Schools Inc. Cards and memorials can be mailed to Julie HANSHAW, 501 E. Briggs Ave., Fairfield 52556. Online condolences can be made to the family at www.behnerfh.com.

Behner Funeral Home in Fairfield is assisting with arrangements.

Mrs. HOLMES was born April 17, 1927, in Houghton, the daughter of William "Bill" and Cecelia SANDERS HELLMAN. She married Charles Melvin HOLMES June 24, 1947, at St. John's Catholic Church in Houghton. He died Jan. 18, 1997.

Mrs. HOLMES's passions were her faith, family and attending Mass. She loved preparing home-cooked meals for all those who visited, no matter what the hour. Freshly baked cookies and cakes were always available to children and grandchildren. She loved her flower gardens and sewed many quilts for her family. Christmas was a special time of year for her, buying a special gift for each family member.

She volunteered at the Jefferson County Hospital Gift Shop, The Bargain Box, and Fairfield schools. She served her church, organizing funeral dinners and distributing communion to shut-ins. She was an avid reader and would lure in any-family (sic) member to help put together a puzzle.

She had a quick wit, a sense of humor, and was devoted to her family and friends.

Survivors include: 11 children, Charles HOLMES and wife Marilyn of Fort Madison, Tom HOLMES and wife Marilyn of Cedar Rapids, Jeanne HARTMAN and husband Joe of Swisher, Larry HOLMES and wife Michele of St. Louis, Missouri, Mike HOLMES and wife Kelly of Plainfield, Illinois, Julie HANSHAW and husband Greg of Fairfield, John HOLMES of Fairfield, Jacquie GREENFIELD and husband Doug of Palo, Jennifer BYRNES and husband Bob of Fairfield, Joni RIZZO and husband Steve of Center Point, and Scott HOLMES and wife Heidi of Marion; one daughter-in-law, Jill HOLMES of Iowa City; 51 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Merlin HELLMAN of Fort Madison.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by: her parents; two sons, Dan and Marty HOLMES; one brother Marvin HELLMAN; and one sister, Janice THOMAS.
