John D. GAW

John D. GAW, 77, of Jefferson City, Missouri, died Monday, Dec. 21, 2015, at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri.

A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Sunday in Freeman Chapel in Jefferson City, with the Rev. Jennie Martin Dudenhoeffer officiating. Military honors will follow the memorial service.

Visitation will be 1-2 p.m. Sunday at Freeman Mortuary.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Callaway Hills Animal Shelter.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Freeman Mortuary.

Mr. GAW was born Aug. 11, 1938, in Bucklin, Missouri, the son of Harry Cleveland and Opal Lee WALKER GAW. He married Mary MARSHALL Dec. 24, 1965, in Davenport.

When he was 7 years old, Mr. GAW moved with his family to a farm near Keytesville, Missouri, where he attended Keytesville Public Schools. He graduated in 1956.

Mr. GAW attended Moberly Junior College and Truman State University, graduating with a bachelor's degree in business in 1960. While employed with Missouri State Employment Security, he received a master's degree in business administration from Lincoln University.

He was a member of the Missouri Army National Guard from 1960-1967.

In 2002, he retired as chief of benefits with Division of Employment Security after 40 years with the agency. He continued to work part time with the agency until recently.

Mr. GAW was a lifetime member of the American Legion, Roscoe Enloe Post 5 and volunteered weekly for 20 years working at bingo games and cooking.

He enjoyed relaxing with his wife at their cabin at the lake, hunting, fishing, wood-cutting, gardening, working on the farm, cooking and his dog. He played guitar since his 74th birthday.

He was known for his dry sense of humor and his dedication to the happiness of others. He had an uncanny ability to remember numbers often remembering Social Security numbers of cases he had dealt with years before. He loved watching good movies and was a fan of Mizzou basketball and football.

Survivors include: his wife, Mary GAW; three brothers, Harry Edwin of Keytesville, Missouri, Albert Eugene of Liberty, Missouri, and William Robert of Moberly, Missouri; and two grandchildren.
