Charles M. HOLMES

Charles M. HOLMES, 72, of 2186 Key Blvd., died early Saturday morning, Jan. 18, 1997, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

The funeral service was at 11 a.m. today, Monday, Jan. 20, at St. Mary's Catholic Church with the Rev. Stephen Page officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery. Prayers for a Christian wake were lead (sic. led) by Deacon Art ANDERSON Sunday evening at the church, followed by family visitation. Memorials can be made to Fairfield Parks and Recreation or to the family's choice.

HOLMES was born Jan. 17, 1925, in Burlington. He married Jeanette HELLMAN June 24, 1947. He had lived in the Fairfield community for 48 years. He received a bachelor of science degree from Notre Dame University and was an engineer for 31 years for the Department of Transportation. He then was employed as Jefferson County engineer until retiring in 1987. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife of Fairfield; seven sons, Charles of Fort Madison, Tom and Scott, both of Cedar Rapids, Dan of Bettendorf, Larry of Davenport, Mike of Plainfield, Ill., and John of Fairfield; five daughters, Jeanne HARTMAN of Moreno Valley, Calif., Julie HANSHAW of Fairfield, Jacquie GREENFIELD of Palo, Jenny BYRNES of Champlin, Minn., and Joni GILCHRIST of Cedar Rapids; 30 grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by a son, Marty; and a sister, Betty HAAS.
