Virgil E. BRADFIELD, 97, of Batavia and formerly of Stockport, died at 9:20 p.m. Wednesday, July 29, 2015, at Parkview Care Center in Fairfield.

Arrangements are pending at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua.

Vergil E. BRADFIELD

Vergil E. BRADFIELD, 97, of rural Batavia and formerly of Stockport, died at 9:20 p.m. Wednesday, July 29, 2015, at Parkview Care Center, Fairfield.

The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua, with the Rev. Danny Cary officating. Masonic rites by Workman Lodge and military honors by Elvin E. Cecil Post will follow the service. Cremation will follow the service, with private burial of cremains at a later date in Spencer Cemetery in Stockport (note: in Van Buren Co., IA).

Visitation will be 2-3 p.m. Sunday, prior to the service, at the funeral home.

Gifts to a memorial to be designated later by the family can be left at the funeral home or mailed to the family at 1988 Dewberry Ave., Batavia 52533.

Mr. BRADFIELD was born May 10, 1918, near Packwood, the son of Verne and Lora NELSON BRADFIELD. He married Emma Jane NIXON Feb. 16, 1941, in Milan, Michigan.

Mr. BRADFIELD grew up in the Packwood community and moved as a youth with his family to rural Stockport. He graduated from Stockport High School. He was a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II in Europe, where he flew 27 missions and earned the Air Medal with three clusters and the Victory Medal.

Following the war, the BRADFIELDs farmed near Stockport, retired to town in 1974 and moved to the Batavia community in 2011 to be near their daughter.

Mr. BRADFIELD was a member of Stockport United Methodist Church, Workman Lodge No. 634, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, Elvin E. Cecil Post No. 147 American Legion, Chapter 544 Order of Eastern Star, all in Stockport. He was a member of the Scottish Rite and KAABA Shrine Temple in Davenport. He served 18 years as a volunteer at the Veterans Hospital in Iowa City.

He enjoyed fishing, woodworking, playing cards and spending time with family and friends. He enjoyed helping others.

Survivors include: his wife; one daughter, Pamela MILLER and husband David of Batavia; four grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by: three brothers, Clarice, Donald and Delbert BRADFIELD; five sisters, Aura KELLER, Edra BRADFIELD, Ruth BROWN, Emily LAIRE and Lorna Jean ANDERSON; and three siblings in infancy.

A graveside service for Vergil and Emma Jane BRADFIELD will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Spencer Cemetery in Stockport.

Military rites for Mr. BRADFIELD will be carried out by Iowa Army National Guard and Elvin E. Cecil Post No. 147, American Legion of Stockport.

Gifts to a memorial to be designated later by the family can be left at the cemetery or mailed to the family at 1988 Dewberry Ave., Batavia 52533.
